i've read around and have the impression that fujifilm ones seem to have the best night pics?

anyway after shooting continuously for 3 weeks in excess of 1k photos, i more or less firm up what i really want in a cam. the panasonic fx3 i used for the trip couldn't really make it in pretty dark areas.

eg i was in a gondole ride in venice at night with a few other tourists. we went through dark stretches of rivers. one of the lady was using... duno what brand/model, and forgot to ask! but suspect could be a sony. never use flash. layman also la... just happy happy point n shoot here shoot there, and i peeped at the preview in the screen... waaa... the pic actually came out quite clearly and bright. my fx3 totally cannot make it unless use flash (coz boat ma... very rocky). and the night shots with flash really sux to the core... super ultra noisy. so really wasted the whole ride couldn't take any photos (especially those by-the-river cafes which are lighted).

i think for a layman pns, day shots i think can be quite insignificant in terms of comparing which is better? coz i think more or less about there one? correct me if i'm wrong.

so what i really want is a cam that excel in night shots without having to be a pro (must use tripod la, this n that la, etc). hmm... pardon me for the non-technicality... it's something like having a very fast exposure so that won't blur blur, hence dun really have to be super stabilise the cam, and yet the fast exposure can capture a clear/bright/detailed-enuff shot.

preferably using sdcard coz all my other media are somehow sdcards, so can share resources readily. but if final recommendation still is fujifilm (using xd rite?), then i think also bobian.

then other requirements are compact/light and good battery life. budget preferably in the 500+ region max. is there any THE cam to get?

this nick looks familiar.. :think::bsmilie:

which fuji u toking about? felicia recommended F50fd, which i'm going to hands on next week during the comex show.

my fren's canon ixus taking night shots seems not bad. dono which model though but it's quite old one already.

if you're planing to get a pns, next week will be your field day at suntec :bsmilie:

well.. the recently released F50fd or F40fd has dual memory card slots for both xD and SD.. would be THE cam according to what you've described..

waa... dual mem... that really sounds like godsent if it's the best for night shots too!

well, in terms of high iso, shooting at night without tripod/flash, fuji compacts are better..
but if you are just looking at normal night scenary, not in any moving vehicle.. there are other compacts that are better, of cos you'll need a tripod..

hmm... greedy... if have both then of cos best. but guess i gotta make a compromise. what are the handful of models that are better like you've mentioned?

Go to:
www.dpreview.com or www.dcresource.com or www.steves-digicams.com to check the reviews of the cams you are interested in.

F31FD good for night shots/low light pics. F40FD should also be good and the new and upcoming F50FD.

thanks for the urls! right now seriously i have no specific models in mind.. really gotta start from scratch... will certainly check the models out as recommendations roll in.

a tripod would be a better investment

i think i shouldn't be going to that extent of carrying a tripod around ba :sticktong ... if i take photos, most probably is when i'm overseas (normal days i hardly ever bring cam out), and when i'm overseas and go out walk walk, i dun like to bring any bag/pouch, so carrying a tripod will really be a chore. besides, imagine the sight of using a black (usually) tripod with a tiny silver (usually) pns cam mounted on top......... :p

anyway i usually just find my "natural" bases to support the cam lor hehe...

i like the gorilla pod..
any of the usual suspects got sell?

if u cant wait anymore, just go and get a F31fd.
I just bought 1 yesterday.

1. Price is within budget.
2. Good for night shoot (but may need to adjust EV higher by 2 steps and ISO to 400-800, 1600 quite noisy).
3. High ISO but low noise, hence sometimes dont need to use flash.
4. Good battery life.... 580 shots! Way better than the latest F50.
5. Can go aperture and shutter priority, unlike the F40.
6. You need it fast.

juz curious wat's the rating for F50 batt life?
