How you keep your lens??

I am just wondering how do you keep your lens....
I have been using SLR for a while, and recently to DSLR...

I always pack my lens in bag with the lens pointing downward (lens cap at the bottom of the bag)

Is this the right way to store the lens?? Or should I put it with the lens facing upward??

Will the way you place the lens damage the zoom, etc???

This is all up to you and how thick the padding is on the bottom of the bag. I can pack my cams in different ways in each of the bags and it's also due to how I need to grab the camera out each time.

I always keep lens and body apart..

As both are already huge on their part (almost all my lens filter thread 77mm) , having them together makes them compact packing harder..

My zoom is the 28-105mm f3.5-5.6.... I feel the zooming could be affected after long term face down storage.... Not as smooth.... previously, all my zoom was kit lens, and just face down, and did not feel anything.... this is my first USM lens and a more expensive lens for me....

I felt that maybe the way you keep should be the right way for long term storage.... For shooting, short term, should be ok to face downward...

I really like inner focusing lens with no linear extension of any sort..... like 24 f2.8, 17-40mm f4L, 70-200mm L.........

Wonder why 50mm f1.4, 24-105mm f4L all cannot be like this.... I believe should be design limitation.........

It shouldn't affect the zoom action, coz you're keeping it compact. But if you worry about this, then get a bigger bag and keep the camera and lens level (i.e. horizontally)

If my zoom lense have the same problem of no longer feeling 'smooth' when zooming, can anything be done by myself ?? Or must it be send back to the servicing centre ??

don quite understand what u mean by long term.. to me long term is inside the drycab.

short term, inside bag, i put my cam sideways (lens pointing to a side rather than upwards or downwards) with the handgrip facing upwards for convenience. i can easily grab the cam out of the bag.

When keeping a zoom lens, i always zoom the lens back to the default position (the lens will retract without the front part coming out). Then the front part of the lens face up. for example the kit lens 18-55mm, there's this dot under the 24mm. I will always point the focal length at that dot before keeping my lens.

Haha, quite true~ it will be sad that the lens is kept all the way in the cabinet. The lens will :cry:

Long term = lay flat in the DRICAB if you have not gotten one yet........

Short term = your lens manual will state to turn your lens to a certain mm before inserting into bag...best if u engage the zoom lock (i think that's what they call it) if possible...but usually put it with the mount at the base and dun apply any load on the top of the lens!!!

short term is when ferrying equipment between shoots when outdoors or during holidays when dri-cab is not available....

long term is anytime u can put in the DRI-CAB...haha:bsmilie:

I attached it to my camera and point the lens downwards in my sling bag when i am not shooting. =)

I see.... May I know what type of bag are you using....

I am using reporter, and my cam is always lens pointing downward if I leave in my bag....

Heehee.... I do bring my lens all out recently weekly when time permit..... have not shot for a while....

Currently, no dry cab, only dry box....

All lens facing downward still.... Will switch the lens over.....

I stack some primes on top of each other at times..... :embrass:

i keep lens facing downwards. easier to take out to shoot.

however for long term storage i'd say keep it level i.e. have the lens and cam body horizontal.
