Hi I'm just wondering if it's possible to get almost the same effect on portraits as DSLR using powershot? I've tried shooting landscrapes and plants, the pics turns out to be quite amazing but can't seems to get it right for portraits. I'm using A710IS btw...

Try teh Portrait mode on the dial of the cam.

zoom to about 50mm and shoot ...

and also i realise sometimes when i zoom too much the aperture becomes smaller...as in larger in number...

Emm, yes. Which is Good for portrait anyway. haha. Try to make the 1/F number around 8-11.

Zoom to the max focal length, and set the smallest possible aperture under Av. That should gives you the best possible isolation for portraits for a P&S camera.

Technically, it should be the biggest apperture (smallest f-number).

U cannot get DSLR-like effects using a small PnS for portraiture due to the tiny sensor size. As the tiny sensor size gives a great depth of field even at the largest aperture, getting a good background blur for example is not possible. I also used to have the A710 IS and also cannot achieve this effect.

hehe. ya quality wise, still cant compare de la. if so, no one will buy DSLR le :)

DSLR's becos of their lens interchangeability which gives different perspectives and angles. PnS n prosumers have only a non-interchangeable lens.
