I wonder if one adopt self-improve restrictions and beliefs
can the creative thinking process be retarded in some way
or another.

the trick is to stop thinking too much and just doing. hahhahaha.
the next thing is to smile more. smile like a maniac if you want. i'm still trying to get that part right. hahha its too difficult.

it depends on what restrictions you are imposing. If you restrict yourself to a certain field, so that you can focus more within the field (and specialise), you may be able to get more creative ideas relating to the field, but none for other fields.

Whereas if you are restrictive to a certain technique (for example), you may retard on the creativeness. Example, if you refrain yourself from flash or filters, you restrict yourself from the creative methods related to these techniques.

how to define "self-improve restrictions and beliefs"?

sometimes learning too much can curb creativity as well, especially when what you have learned already shaped your shooting style. but learning more is better than being an idiot. the only part to this is to unlearn and shoot completely different every time for the same subject. effectively forcing yourself to "self-imposed creativity improvement?"

think different

reject the norms and try to do it in a new way
sometimes it works and sometimes it doesn't

don't be afraid of failure and getting it wrong

try standing on chairs, tables, lying on the floor....
shooting between stuff.
use fisheye etc.

Let the 4 year-old child in us out again. It's time to unlearn what we have learnt. It's knowledge that stifles creativity, because we thought we knew it cannot be done, we're no longer willing to try something new.

well said.

I think relaxation helps. Sometimes when I am relaxed while walking or bathing, suddenly an idea just comes out!

"Creative problem solving" in popular belief can be cultivated by a systematic approach called "TRIZ",
which is similar to Chinese 熟能生巧。

Genuine creativity is a born thing I think, which can not be cultivated.

apparently, most of us are born to be quite creative. ;)

Juz that while going thru the process of education and growing up... conformity is cultivated. So wat creativity are we tokking about.

Read a book if you really do need help, i'd recommend Freeman Patterson which talks about what earlier post have suggested about us losing it along the way because of perceptions.

I'd taken cue from what i've read about systematic ways to further drive that creativity
- Take 5 works of others that you really like (different from yours) then try it.
- Take 5 works of others that you really like (similar to yours) then try it.
- Take 1 picture that is completely not your style for every 5 standard ones.
- Take 1 picture that is your style but take it to extremes (e.g. high-key blown out)
- Pictures, stories or subjects, you'd take the same approach.

Its always good to learn from others but you'll realise that you would eventually gravitate to wards a certain style (as your perception of pictures i.e. top 5 would represent what you'd like in a picture and wouldn't just come from one photographer) and then you would start to visualise your own pictures using the works of others only and reference (or better still think of doing better than them). Give it sometime but the 1 picture concept is one way to really push your creativity but eventually you'd feel comfortable with what works and perhaps what doesn't based on your perception. And every once in a while, post up onto the forum to get feedback. Its one thing to be creative but it's another to be the only one to appreciate it?

I am of course talking bout creativity with regards to photography.

The most we can do is to be a pretentious artist but is it worth
sacrificing aesthetic pleasure for innovative art? :)
