Can't decided between Canon 400D, Nikon D40 or Panasonic LX2. I've been using a P&S all this while and thinking of getting my first SLR.

1) Not planing to get additional LEN due to budget constrain for the moment, how much can i do with the 18-55mm f/3.5-5.6 kit lens? Can i use it as a normal " P&S camera " that has additional features like wide angle, marco shoot etcs?

2) Don't wanna get a semi pro cam, as i feel it's time to start directly with SLRs.

Any advise?

I think, or rather I'm pretty sure, the Pana LX2 is not a DSLR.

You won't go wrong with Nikon D80. If you start with a D40, you may get poisoned and want something better, but if size is important, then it's ok to get the D40 or D40x.

D40 is cheap but no internal focus motor (Limited Lenses with Auto-Focus). 400D has a better technology over D40.

If you want to try out DSLR and cheaper range, then D40 should be the one. If you have no plans not to upgrade the body, i feel is better to get a better body like 400D or D80. At least in future when you plan to purchase lens, you wont face problem like looking out for lenses with focus motor unless you can do with manual focus on D40.

P&S with 18-55mm surely no problem. If you want to do sniping from far range, you need to get a telephoto lens.
