That your camera body fails you during a shoot?

I was asked to cover some events and weddings for friends and I keep having this paranoid of my camera breakdown in the middle of a shoot.

Do you guys carry an extra body? or trust your camera?

Chances are, they will fail and that is guaranteed 100%. The variable is if they will fail during an important shoot?

It's all in your appetite for risk and your tolerance for risk. If either are low, well, the only alternative is to bring a second or third body.

Rule #1 : if you want to keep your friends, NEVER accept to cover their mariage or any important event for them.
Rule #2 : if something can fail, then it will fail.
Rule #3 : if several things can fail, the worse one will happen.
Rule #4 : if you have prevented every cases and it can not fail, it'll still fail.
Rule #5 : never trust your camera, even if it's expensive pro one. I owned more than 30 camera in my life, the only 2 who failled during important shots were the most pro ones.

My advise : go to a professionnal photographer and pay him the right price and offer this to your friend. This way you are sure that :

- if it fails, it's not your fault
- you'll keep your friends
- you'll keep your camera in good working condition.

than you use a main camera...

and bring a backup camera for backup the main camera if it failed.

you also need to bring another backup camera for the main camera and the backup camera if both fail at the same time.

just in case all 3 cameras failed at the same time, so you need to bring a forth camera for backup.

than you want to have more insurance about the cameras, put another camera in your bag....

Oh, yes, we have not talk about lenses, flashes, camera batteries, batteries pack, cables , CF cards, storage devices, filters, camera bags, and also back up photographer yet..

back then, can load film real fast ... and when I shoot with the 6 cameras, all Canon AE-1s, I usually load the camera with 3 type of films, 2 color and 1 black and white. back then again, zoom sucks. So I generally shoot with 2 to 3 cameras at a time, depending on what focal length I need. Most of the time, I will have a 28 or 35 on 1 body, a 50 and a 135 on the 2nd and 3rd.

super stressed? might as well jump over the bridge and get it done with. luckily, I actually did loose only a few images. Managed to get the film out safely in the dark room.

btw, back them, cameras are compact, and the 6 AE-1 I had, with those tiny FD lenses, the bad is lighter than what I have today.

IF one asks such a question .... she must have never heard of "The Murphy's Law" :think:

Murphy's Law was named after Captain Edward A. Murphy and is formed by eight laws.

• If anything can go wrong, it will.
• If there is a possibility of several things going wrong, the one that will cause the most damage will be the one to go wrong.
• If anything just cannot go wrong, it will anyway.
• If you perceive that there are four possible ways in which something can go wrong, and circumvent these, then a fifth way, unprepared for, will promptly develop.
• Left to themselves, things tend to go from bad to worse.
• If everything seems to be going well, you have obviously overlooked something.
• Nature always sides with the hidden flaw
• Whatever has happened wrong, is bound to happen again .... maybe even worse.

All events planning will surely have some kinds of backup.

As for you, your single point of failure is your camera if it fails then all your preparation for that very day goes down the drain... you don't want that to happen right?

You gotta have backup in all your equipment man. Not just cam, but also flash, batts and CF cards. Anything can go wrong during impt shooting moments.

Always have a clause in your contract that covers you in the event of equipment failure, especially if you're shooting events or weddings. Of course, offer enough assurance that 'all measures' have been taken to minimise the occurance of such, and make sure that you follow up on said measures. Afterall, even if you don't get sued for breech of contract in the event of non, or non-satisfactory delivery, you would have made a very unhappy customer who will surely spread the word.

Having said that, always bring along at least one back-up body that you know is reliable, not some cast-off, flash, batts and cords, even if you're using wireless. If you look at many pro's equipment bag, their camera gear despite having several bodies, flash and lenses, usually contain much more misc stuff that can get them out of a jam. Nowadays, very likely two bags - one for camera and gear, and one for general life-saving barang barang inc lappy.

You are putting someone else's happy occassion on the line here. Not something to play with, especially if it is a paid shoot.

Is always good to have an spare. Human will fall sick too... I had an experience of suffering of food posioning but had to continue shooting for an wedding... The number of time I had to rush to gents was countless.... At that time I dont have associates to cover my ass... So better to be prepare than sorry lol....
