Hello my dearest fellow CSers ;)

I've been a member here for quite a while already, but still considered new, so maybe this is the correct place to post this thread regarding the culture here in CS. After posting a few threads and joining other people's thread, I've come to notice a certain kind of behaviour that's quite accepted here in CS, which in some other places can be viewed as a very ungentlemanly and dishonorable behaviour.

Firstly, I've noticed that there are those "self appointed professional critique", who does not post any photos taken by them at all...I mean, c'mon, let's be fair and put at least one, its not too much to ask right? ;) Its to give the guy/gal being criticised, a chance to verify the qualification of the criticizer. Its always easy to comment and give ideas etc.... when one can't produce what one propose, its unfair to the guy who spend hard work and time posting up, being open and got disappointing critiques by these group of people.

Secondly, there are those who make short and cutting remarks, and when questioned upon for more details, they are no where to be seen...GONE!! It's quite remarkable and unbelievable. And you can see them hopping from one thread to another, obviously ignoring any further questioning.... cyber arsonist

I believe people here are of a certain calibre and intelligence, there's no need for anyone to be embarassed by being reminded of such fundamental courtesy, so I sincerely hope that more honour be brought to this place, and let's be open and learn from each other, myself highly included. As you can see, I've put up quite a number of photos even before I started to participate in commenting about other's photo, so if you see that my photos are not up to standard, then I have given you a chance to ignore what I commented.

What do you all think? Any similar observations? Or maybe its just me :bsmilie:

I don't think it's something special on CS. Maybe we should lower the expectation at times in exchange for the internet convenience.

A personal choice indeed, there are those who benefit from this place, and take this place seriously, not just a place for convenience though.

this is my personal view and not the view of CS and/or other CSers

actually the critique giver does not need to show you his caperbility in order to critique
since it takes some effort to actually give a good critique, you should be able to read
and try to see from another point of view, then decide for yourself if their views are
credible or not.

Sorry, but I beg to differ from your view about this. As this is a photographers' website, it makes no sense for members to not want to showcase their talent, unless they have something to hide.

As we mostly do not know each other personally, the only way to tell if the critique is credible or not is by people's portfolios, without it, its like chasing the wind whether the comment is good or bad. Conversely, if i know this person as a buddy, I would then not require to see it. My POV. :)

Maybe not entirely. If you see photography as an art, credibility is less relevant.

as some other csers would say "a food critique does not need to know how to cook"

in photography, of course it would be nice to be able to see the work of the critique giver
but not necessary
you do not need to see the work in order to know if the critique given is of value or not.

essentially a critique giver doesn't need to produce a good picture to be able to give a critique, but he/she need to demonstrate a certain level of understanding of what a good picture is. the latter part is difficult to verify in an open forum like this since everyone has his/her own tastes and preferences. the critique seeker then will need to have some ability to differentiate useful comments from not so useful ones.

if you find any member's posting unnecessary, do feedback to the moderators/superusers who are moderating the section the thread is in.

I believe you started this thread for friendly discussion. So here's my view.

Being able to give good critique and being a good photographer are two totally unrelated things. Most art critique don't do art themselves. If a critique is constructive or provides suggestions for improvement, that's good critique, regardless of whether the poster had any of his work posted up, or even if his own work might not be good, that's not relevant.

If you compare with other arts where critics abound (like books and films), most of those critics are not writers/directors/actors themselves.

To a certain extent I would agree with your views. In most well-known Photography Magazines for example, the person giving the critique is usually an accomplished Pro photographer whose photo, credentials (and/or portfolio) are clearly stated up front. This lends credibility to the critique given, although it is also not uncommon to see two experts disagreeing over the merits of the same photo.

Having said that, CS members are also free to ignore comments made by self-appointed or proclaimed "experts" or "critics" who have not posted any photos of their own on CS. Nasty comments posted under the guise of critique are not tolerated and are dealt with accordingly by the mods.

Well, I do critique pictures and I rarely post in those sub-forums as I think my shots aren't up to par yet.

Yet pictures which I do submit in other sub-forums are open to critique as well. It goes both ways. We all learn, either from our own mistakes or other's mistakes. Being harsh on the photogs is a different issue to me here. That's on the critique's behaviour and personality. Some are just like that.

Just remember one thing, we're here to learn. Take the critique as a form of learning. Ignore how it's delivered but rather on what is it tat we can improve on for our photography.

Yakult culture!

=D

intended goodness goes in, but ultimately, everything ends up as s**t =D

I'm enjoying these differing POV on this subject already, but I respectfully see all your points so far ;)

I enjoy your macro works, I think they are truly awesome. So you see, even though you don't post it here, there's still a link I can browse to your portfolio.:)

Yes, i do agree that when one is making a critique on one's photo works on public display, one need to be aware of one's position to the Rights of Critique.

If one's demonstrate and produced a certain level of consistence quality works, he has more credible and have a certain Rights to make his judgment on another's works.

However, if One does NOT even shoots for a living or passion, but making such personal comments on public forum(s) and open places, the Receiver should take it with a pitch of salt, or simply ignore it. YES, you do have the Rights to request the Commenter or Critiques for his qualifications or experiences level, so that Receiver is informed and making his choices to accept, reject or even rebut the Comments given.

No worry, there are people inline with your thinking.

Forgive me :(

Joker ;) Your flickr saved your day. Hey don't get me wrong here, not every one who don't post are being categorised here, there are those who send me their portfolio or photos through email, and they do not want to post in CS, I still feel that's a polite gesture. :)
