Richo GX100 vs. NIKON COOPIX P5000, which one is better for a newbie?

It's hard to decide. Please give some advise.

Thanks!

They are of different leaque altogather.
In terms of sharpness and contrast , you can't beat the Nikon, but in terms on features, you have to give it to Ricoh . So all depends what you are going for ?

Also, do note that P5000 can give you a longer zoom using the teleconverter which the GX100 lacks and that you can use Nikon's fantastic flashes on the P5000 and your future (Nikon) DSLRs.

For me, I bought the GX100 as it comes with built-in wide-angle (24mm!) and can write RAW.

vans_cafe, you bought the GX100 yet? :D

Hi Great Randius ,

Well, I am still looking around for one here .....as i just sold off my Fuji F30....
Really like the 24mm feature of the Ricoh ...
any thought letting go yours ?:bsmilie:

cheers !

Nice try there :bsmilie: But I am now loving it too much to let it go ;) But pardon me asking, I do see there are a couple of GX100s in the BnS section, those didn't work out for you?

Well, remember seeing one chap selling for $970.
thats only $20 difference. i rather buy one then.
just that my budget is $850.:(

Regarding the comments that the nikon P5000 gives better contrast and sharpness i totally disagree. Sharpness is depend on personal preference and too sharp look fake. By the way the contrast too very good in GX 100. Personally i am also using the D200 and trinity len. GX 100 is just my backup for wide angle camera. Hot spot in long time exposure and noise level are the only two imperfections in GX100 i can see till now.

I believe you will only be able to buy a new VF-1 kit at around $820 with one-year warranty now. I am not sure if the MSC promotion is still going on. The extra HA-2 adaptor and DW-6 lens will cost you around $200. All the best on getting one within your budget :)

Do list down your preferences and features you are seeking in your new camera and bring a couple of memory cards down to any of the reputable shops to take a few pictures with the cameras. After having a feel of handling of both cameras and taking a look at the pictures back at home. I believe you will be able to reach a decision. Just get the one giving you a deeper and better impression :)

But these 2 are in such a different price category... the Nikon P5000 only $500++, but the Ricoh is $900++ isn't it?

Well snoopyzai , thats your opionion maybe cos you are holding to a GX100. :)
It's just my two cent opinion as I made a side by side comparison of the pictures taken by the 2 cameras. :)
Cheers !
