For those who had tried them before, which lens has the better image quality?

For my photography knowledge only...not buying..:bsmilie:

I have 35mm f2 and quite like it as it's lighter comparing to Sigma 30mm.
Tried the 30mm in the shop but end up didn't get it due to the same reason. (and since i already have the 35mm, hard to convince myself to get another 3xmm one.)

Quality wise, i think Sigma 30mm will give a better bokeh. Image is sharp.

You can try to search for the sample photo submitted in flickr, just type "Sigma 30mm".

I might get the 30mm one day.

But i would prefer if Nikon come out with Pancake lens, as in Pentax (well, they have 45mm AIS but is very hard to find nowadays)

Hi,

I use both lenses for different occassions. The Nikon 35mm is excellent as a general walkabout lens as it translates roughly to the classic 50mm when used on a DSLR. Great for snapshots amd street photography. I find it useful for full body portraits as the bokeh is excellent. It is lighter than the Sigma 30mm and again this helps as a carry everywhere lens. Can be hard to buy off the shelf as stocks of this lens appear to be limited and I only acquired it 2 months back from a fellow CS'er.

I bought The Sigma 30mm 4 months earlier as I got tired waiting for the Nikon 35mm. No regrets getting it as it is an excellent portrait lens and when fully open at 1.4 produces truly creamy bokeh.

Both lenses have served me well. If I have to make a call on sharpness, I would say the Nikon 35mm wins hands down, however on bokeh and portraits in general, the Sigma has the lead. Hence my decision to keep both lenses.

Hey camelot88, thanks for your reply :)

Now I know more about these 2 lenses. And btw, I think D40/x owners may want or like to get the Sigma as it can AF with their cams.

I think Sigma 30mm f/1.4 suffers from focusing defect at the corner parts when using on D70 and D200, which my friends and I have tested, and it works fine on D50, and heard online also works well in D40/X

Weird...XD....perhaps due to the focusing mechanism in D50/40 is different from those in D70/D200.

However, the center focusing works well generally.

Thanks for the info...

tried the sigma b4. very slow in focusing with a d200. ended up getting the AFD 35/2 when it appeared at the shop.

if u are purely digital, the sigma is not too bad cos it's a little wider and abt 1 stop faster. else, stick with the nikon.

In addition to that, there is a 1.4 is you don't mind MF (manual focus) and price + some luck to find a piece.

Otherwise get the AF28/1.4D lah.. ;p

The Nikon 35/2 is one of the sharpest lens I've seen. Would be a big surprise that the Sigma can surpass the sharpness. Just speculating.

Hi,

What is ther price of both lenses here in sg, can anyone point in in the right directions on where to get it at a good price.

I need to get one for general usage as my zoom are too heavy for daily use.

Thanks in advance

If it's for general use on DX, then I would recommend the Sigma 24/1.8 instead because I feel that 30/1.4 or 35/2 may not be wide enough for certain shots. Then again, you should know better what you shoot, so this is just a 2c comment. :)
