Recommend camera for newbie

Er.. budget, fields of photography you're interested in? Otherwise I'd recommend an EOS1D MKII or MKIII when it's released just because.
If you are going down the SLR path, a couple of ways you can go about it:
1) Digital. Get a 2nd hand 300D/350D/10D/D70/D50 etc and the kit lens. It'll set you back about $600-$800. Do bear in mind that this is only the beginning of a very long and expensive journey.
2) Flim. Go search the B&S section, you will occasionally get super deals on film cameras. Get one with a kit lens (usually 28-80 etc). This will set you back from about $60 (body only) to $150 for a basic body and lens.
Get that can auto focus and something current, so that the gear/accessories you get can be used if you upgrade to a DSLR.
I'd go for digital as you can see the results instantly and look around for a film body once you've gotten the hang of things and want to try other mediums.

Would you like to go for some affordable compacts with manual controls? One camera just came into my mind cos I saw it in Harvey Norman recently, the Kodak Z650. At $299, it's quite a steal! Of course, it's the "older" version than those offered in the market today. Maybe you can read up some and consider. This link is pretty good for a start:

This is a non-answerable question. All dSLRs and most or all compacts have manual settings. So, any camera will do.Hi, I am just starting out on photography... Wanna know which camera to buy. Only condition is that it has to have manual settings which i can set my own shuttle speed and etc...

BTW, it is called "shutter speed". NASA is controlling the shuttle speed, not us. We can only control the shutter speed.

Try a Canon Powershot: the A470 (if I remember correctly). It has now been replaced on the new market. However, if you look at the medium range of Canon digicams, you will find all the manual controls you seek. If you buy a digital camera, I suggest you stay with the well-established manufacturers, such as Canon, Nikon, Olympus. Do not go for either the upper or the lower end: the first will be excessive and the latter will not have manual controls (in general).

I would suggest that you get a prosumer camera first then. A few models you can consider:

good call. get a prosumer first, less problems. when you've settled in, sell your prosumer and get a dslr.
I reccomend canon 400D cos its one of the cheapest GOOD camera money can buy at the moment. if budget permits then nikon d80. If i not wrong the price for 400D is about $1100~$1200 at most "photo" shops. reason not suggesting 2nd hand is as we are new, we dun have to worry bout 2nd hand issues such as maintainance repair and being cheated. :nono: Warranty takes care of the repairs and other newbie problems. Just my two cents worth. Nothing against the rest of the bro whom have spoken earlier. However if you unsure how long you into this then you better off with canons3is or s5is.

He got budget constraint lah..
400D/350D for DSLR. Or go ahead with a prosumer. I jumped from a compact to a DSLR and I find it ok. Just make sure you have enough $ to support your DSLR tho. Those things comes in hundreds and thousands. Nothing lesser.
