Hi, my take on a 'No Fishing' signboard.

nofishing01.jpg

Personally, I think the dead space could have been cropped out.
But then, it would also be too tightly cropped if it were to be done.

So, C&C most welcome.

Thanks for your time.

this is an example of a non-pic. there is nothing in there that is pic worthy. and it is not even clear what is ur subject: the square board? (but why is it touching the edge of the pic?) the no fishing sign? the spherical light? the clouds? or what? and what is that u are trying to say with all these elements? it is like someone or something accidentally firing off a PnS camera.

Will try again next time.
See if I can improve on my shots.
Thanks.

don't be discouraged :) for once i thought this was in critique corner from the way you posted your information

for a start, maybe can flip through some photo books and study them

just to add, some practice good for beginners

1. identify the object of interest
2. simplify to frame to compose the object in a clear manner
3. adjust (reposition or use additional lighting like reflector or flashlight) so that the object is well lighted

and if you want to add interest

4. look for secondary elements that will compliment the object and include that in the frame
5. study how the secondary elements affect the attention given to the object (visual guiding lines, size and proportion with respect to main object, colour and contrast with main object)

Haha, not discouraged la.
I would rather be slammed if need be.
That way I can improve.
Thanks a lot tho eikin.
I appreciate that.

now, that's wat i call an excellent advice.

Agreed.
Once again, thanks for your time eikin.
I definitely make sure I have your advice in mind before I shoot anything.

The other way is to "fight" back and tell me that you disagree with me and why ...

Just saying sorry when you get slammed may not necessarily help you at all.

For surely you have something in your mind when you pointed the camera and click. What was it that you saw and trying to say? (If you didnt see anything, then a blind man can have taken this shot also, right?)

For we may not see what you saw - we all have blind spots you know.

And so you may have seen something but you didn't do the right things technically or compositionally to convey this thing.

And if you can say all these things, then people here can point out the very specific and precise technicalities, and other things, and then you can really truly improve.

Or else people can only give you general guidance which may or may not help you at all.

So one possible goal - there other possibilities too - of a good pic is that people know what you saying without you saying a word: the pic speaks for itself.

PS: Don't apologise for your pic. The defacto rule here, and any other open Internet fora, is viewers beware, eg we see others' pics at our own risk of hurting our eyes. Only be clear why you post anything. And then some people may also never get it.

........................................................... it.

huh????:dunno:

it's a learning process!

no one started out taking 'award winning' masterpieces. its through trials and errors and a willingness to learn and admit one's mistake before one can improve.

of cos the right kind of ADVICE and GUIDANCE does play a part.

this time the TS might be unclear as to how to really compose a photo and upon posting his foto up for critique, he gets QUALITY ADVICE from some member here. i hope he acts upon them and hopefully he'll come out with better photos the next time round.

yeah.

it's a learning process!... admit one's mistake before one can improve.
And learning is of and in the mind.

So the best and right place to start is in the head.

And with most if not all things, if you THINK right you do it right.

So "fight" is just one way to get out the thing in the head ... or you one of those who dont get it, ah?

:dunno: huh?

wat's there to fight if one's intention is to learn from the pros and experienced shooters here?

how can one learn anything if one comes with a CLOSED MIND and is hell-bent on having ppl see things their own way?

we should be giving out SOUND ADVICE instead of dishing out blastings and slammings of which not much valid point is given, not much direction is given, not much real quality advice is given!

in order to ''fight'' one needs the weapons and skills. i see an unfair fight going on.

in any case, critique can be honest yet civilised, it doesn't need to be degrading.

i can only pick up a meaningful question, which i would've asked myself, inside this post (underlined)

otherwise i find the parts in bold especially unnecessary.

For we may not see what you saw - we all have blind spots you know.

and because we all have our blindspots, it is unreasonable to act in such an imposing manner. we can fire questions to generate response and information, but passing private assumptions off as like that of speaking of truth is rather ... unreasonable.

this ... seriously i have no idea what you're talking about.

And I got no fight with you.

And there are things said that are left "unsaid". As I said it is in the mind. I may say black but I mean white, and vice versa. There is art in rhetoric. And sometimes things are best left unsaid.

But I have no fight with you. So dont fight.

PS: On "unreasonableness", it is not more unreasonable to tell someone what to say or not to say? I say what I say, and I would never think to tell anyone what to say.

PPS: There is a Malay proverb that goes, "Siapa makan cili rasalah pedasnya".

you should have no fight with anyone else here as well if your aim is to share knowledge.

I have. As you do too. And if you dont see my method that's not my problem.

what method are u talking about?:dunno:

going around and slamming, condemning and belittling others?:dunno:
Like I said everyone has blind spots. So I let this pass.

guys, firstly maybe I should have explained my pic.
my bad for not doing that.
as i am pretty new at photography, i have yet to tell stories thru them.
that said, a picture sometimes needs words to express wat the photographer wants to relay.
esp in my case as i am still learning.

its actually a dedication to a friend who passed away quite some time ago.
he loved fishing and would go to prohibited spots just to fish and get chase ard by rangers.
i was trying to dedicate this to him, tryin to say that nothing, not even a signboard can stop him fishing, esp in heaven.
so i tried to take the signboard as in to signify wat he loved most, at least to me.

thanks for all the critique, comments and support guys.
i did not mean to start a disagreement.

once again, thanks dudes.

That's touching and perhaps thought provoking about photography as a personal means of expression vs. public interpretation. Enhancing technique helps sharpen the message. Hope you can find the image (or it finds you) that tells this story well.
