Intermittent AF Problems on the D200

Some may recall me complaining about an intermittent AF problem on my first D200 body a little while ago.

After bringing it to NSC, what they had claim a menu error(?) and reseting the menu cleared the problem, which in effect, did fix the problem.

Now the AF problem has come back in an even stranger form. The body refuses to AF at anything above 90deg. I point down it AF. I level it, it AF. I point up it refuses to AF.

So I thought hey maybe there is something loose inside the body. So I tried this. I inverted the camera. It still doesn't AF when I point it up.

Has anyone faced this strange problem before? And the best part is I am set to fly out of singapore again tommorow afternoon. ;( Menu resets, changing lenses, checking for loose contacts at the lens mount all doesn't seem to help.

oh man, even the nsc isnt open tml morning for the techies to have a quick check....

do u have other spare bodies around?

Luckily I do. One more D200. And if that fails too. At least I know my FM3A is still kicking. :bsmilie:

But this still disturbs me to no end. This particular body have had intermittent problems with the AF since the first time I brought it out on a shoot. Sigh. Just my luck for it to be back before my scheduled flight.

phew.... luckily u still had another D200...

i think the next time when u fly back to sg, make the techies do a thorough check of the interior of the body, instead of playing with the menu...its really weird to be able to AF only when its level..

Yeah. And unluckily I've never had the time to properly leave it at NSC for a thorough check. But luckily the next time I'm coming back will be for quite a long while... so there's plenty of time to leave it at NSC this time round.

Just thought there was no harm in checking if anyone else had a similar experience before and if there's a "quick-fix" heh.

Hope this isn't a stupid question... but...
Did you test with different lenses? To make sure is problem with body and not lens?

Yes. Thanks for asking.

I did try every single lens I own. Nikkor AF, AF-S, Tokina, and Tamron. So it's definitely not a problem with the lens.

hahaha.. no lah - just stick to my D70 which is performing just as well from the first day I had it..

Well I guess I seem to be an isolated case rather than the norm. :dunno:
