What does the lens description means?

Hi peeps!

Any idea where can I find explanations on what the lens descriptions means? e.g when a lens is marked with 70mm - 300 mm etc ... what does it mean? and how do I know the zoom factor etc?

Am I being vague? Thanks in advance!!
