The O2 XDA Atom Exec IS a PDA. Or Personal digital assistant. It runs Windows Mobile IIRC, so you should be able to use software made for Windows Mobile.
Windows Mobile is a software that many PDAs use (I believe Palm OS still has the majority of the market). It is NOT the same as the Windows found on your full sized computers and laptops (PCs).
Is it like a toned down version of the PC's windows? So if i download a program for PDA and it comes with a zip file, after i have unzipped it into my PC, i just need to create a folder in the O2 and just copy all the unzipped file into it?
Using a O2 Exec, yes you can even unzip it on the pda.
I think it comes with the pdf reader as well but you can always download the free version at Adobe.

So far I have no problems with it but they have a better one I think is Atom Life.

You can put it anywhere no problem.

Window mobile will hang just like its parent OS. My O2 just hung for no reason and cleared all my data. Becos I have migrated to Mac, I'm not able to sync so lost all my data from dec 2006. But its a better phone to use than other OS becos I can simply reset and use the phone on the spot. Unlike my previious Nokia and motorolas which require me to bring to service center and wait for hours and hours and days after days.
Basically there are three ways of installing program into your PDA:
1) Install using Activesync - after downloading the software (mostly is exe) on your PC, you just click on it to activate the installation process as long as you have connect your PDA to your PC installed with ActiveSync.
2) Install using cab file - files with .cab as extension. Copy the file to your PDA. Activate the file explorer in your PDA, look for the file. Click on it to start the installation process.
3) exe which are for PDA - PPC someware also have .exe like PC version. However such files can only work in the PDA itself. Just copy over to your PDA and click on it will do.
Lastly, like PC, you can create folders to store your files. However try to aviod installing too much software on the PDA itself. If needed, put the files like music, pictures etc in your storage card.

Bro after you get it, do check the O2 site for updates of the firmware. Firmware initially loaded on the Atoms don't perform really well. The new firmware addresses problems from the previous versions and also greatly improve the response of the PDA (ie. opening a menu, switching between task). And yeah $218 is a good price bro.

can i just confirm a concept? am i rite to say that the only phones that can read e-books and pdf files are PDA phones?

i wonder if Nokia E65, N73 and N95 can have the above function of reading e-books.
I used to own a Xda Atom and a Xda stealth.
IMO PDA wif tele functions are lousy. Always hang and slow.
Maybe I had 2 lemons. It doesn't apply for my friend who have been using it for 2 years+ without a problem.
haha.. PDA phones if loaded with too much applications will be slow. I put minimal application on my O2 mini to free up valuable memory. The OS needs some free space to work properly. I have different application on different SD card, just hot swap them when needed, other wise just leave the bare minimum application in there.
Mine is I think the internal battery is dying... always show me low battery (internal) and the last time it faile on me was when I drop the whole phone... Have to disect it and get it fixed piece by piece.. still working now.. Phew...
Nope. It depends on the program. ebooks and PDF software can be used in both phone and non-phone PDA.
I think there's a very big misconception about "PDA phones". A better term would be "Smarthones" since essentially a PDA phone is a Smartphone with a touch-screen interface. So yeah, any Symbian, Palm, Linux or Windows powered smartphone can read e-books.
