would like to ask for ur input on this, i'm considering a Canon Eos 400D body + Tamron 17-50mm lens with accessories (eg. dry cabinet, filter, bag and maybe tripod) budget under $2.2k. do u think is possible or there are better dSLR that i can buy with my budget and where can i get it from? thanks

400d - 12xx-13xx
tamron - 650
dry cabi - 100
crumpler? lowepro? - 50 - 150
tripod - 50 - 300

a bit of a strech but possible... you can check out alan photo or john 3:16 on 5th floor funan or cathay photo at peninsula plaza

400D Body - Oracle
Tamron 17-50 - TCW? They have ready stock available
Dry Cabi, Tripod, Bag can get from Cathy Photos I think, Chris gives amazing rates =)

Or alternatively, get everything from John, Package deal is always better right?

p.s Do remember to write down the best price available in the forum to be use as gauge.

Have fun!

Budget aside - not sure how much the Tamron costs because well, I don't care.. What do you want out of your DSLR?

Have you thought whether you really want into the brand? There are many brands out there, and I'm not anti-Canon, mind you.. But each one has its strengths and weaknesses, or pros and cons if you will.. And that's what you should be looking at first! =)

Your budget seems more than enough to me for all those in terms of entry-level DSLR, so you'd have quite a number of choices - Canon 350/400D, Nikon (I'll skip the D40, I know many others would too) D50/D70 - these would be second hand more likely than not, out of production, Pentax K100D/K10D, Sony Alpha 100, Olympus E410/E510..

Did I miss out any? All these should be within your price range.

Oh when buying, do get a friend who already has a dslr to go down with you, or u can hook up with one of the ppl at clubsnap.

gd start :)

hmmm let me calculate.... ++--+--+-+
help you estimate :p

400D @ 1200 +/-
tamron 17-50 @ 650 +/-
67mm filter @ 30 +/-

dry cabi @ 99 +/-
tripod + head ? @ 170 +/-

Free cam bag ?
Free memory card ?
Free cleaning kit ?
Free screen protector ?
Free dry box ? Silicon gel @ $4

also consider what free stuffs the diff. shops give ? :)

got think of how much memory you would want ?

400D raw images @ 8MB +/- each ?
large jpg images @ 4MB +/- each ?

some1 correct me if my estimates are way off

what do u guys recommend for a newbie set. normal creative use la... wanna practice what i learnt from school.

suggest that you get a 300D ... enough to play ard with ... u can always upgrade later on and keep 300D as spare camera in the future ... A set w kit lens and grip should be gg ard less than $600 ... u can spend ur money on lenses, memory cards, bags, dry cabinet, batteries etc etc etc

remember, camera bodies depreciate very fast ... as a money-no-enough hobbist, I find that "asset protection" is the most important ...

the worse thing you could have done is, buy 1GB of CF card and all the expensive gear and go out of storage when on a shoot...

nv save on a memory cards... get at least 2~4gb if you are going to shoot raw, more if you are those happy-go-snappy type...
1/2 it if you shooting JPG.

here's a recommendation

400D body @ 1150 fm cs.com
2nd hand kit lens @ 70 fm cs.com
430ex flash unit fm ms color
4GB CF card @ 100 n below..

another option is to consider visiting the it fair @ this month end..
