Hi, i am now getting more and more stuck with purchasing my so-called first digital camera.
Anyway, at first i have already make my decision on ixus 850 over fuji f31d. But when i came across nikon coolpix p5000. I found that it is so much friendly-user. As for ixus 850, i found it is not wht i have expected. As for fuji f31d, i read a lot of highly-satisfied reviews.
Pls share yr experiences and recommend a few cams. Thanks.:D

Btw i read a lot about nikon coolpix p5000 cons which is lack of RAW. wht is RAW?

RAW is a file format which allows the the image file to be manipulated over and over again without any loss in quality. It is typically found in dSLR or the higher end prosumer cameras. It gives you a level of flexibility at the cost of time for adjusting the image yourself.

Most Point and Shoot (PnS) cameras will not have this ability because the average user doesn't really want to fiddle too much with post-processing.

As for the cameras you indicated... I've played with the ixus and the F31.
The ixus is a typical PnS, has the usual functions. Does a good job and looks good but nothing really special. The party trick of the F31 is the high ISO which allows you to take photos in low light but downside is that it uses XD cards which are slightly more expensive than the SD cards the ixus uses.

Hi Radedward,

I am in the dilemma like linkyfinsto.

I am deciding on Canon Ixus850 and FujiF31d, i would really appreciate to have a wide angle lens and its design for Canon however reviews has shown that f31fd photo quality is much better than ixus850 that led me at a cross junction to ponder which one to get. I believe the major differential are mentioned as above. what abt optical stabilizer or image stabilizer difference?

Please advice.

Canon's IS is a mechanism in the lens that shifts the lens accordingly to compensate for the shaking of the hand so that the picture will turn out sharp.

Of course there are some limitations. The IS can only help so much if the shutter speed is too low and your hand shakes too much. Also IS cannot help with fast moving objects, only boosting the ISO will help with capturing a fast moving object because you want to up the shutter speed.

So, ask yourself. Is the wider angle of the IXUS worth more to you than the high ISO of the F31?

What would you like to take more of? low light or wide angle?

Think about that and then go to a good camera store and ask to see both and play with both until you come to a decision

Hi radedward,

Thanks for ur info.

So meaning F31 does not have image stabilizer for users who does not have stable hands.
i guess wide angle is a nice to have however not a must ... I am new to photography hence i am not sure if i would take much of fast moving object ... but perhaps low light shots. well what abt normal day shots for both cameras?
A good camera store? care to recommend from your experience? no disclaimer :p

after much pondering, for me it comes down to wide angle and IS vs great low light pix..

i think eventually having great indoor/low light shots taken is more common than u using wide angle..

i might just go for the f31...

reputed camera stores are MS Color in AMK, Alan Photo in Funan etc

Hi Bent,

Thanks for your reply.
Looks like my decision is biased towards f31 after so much recommendation.
The recommendations are too many to ignore or to be a hoax...
Been to MS Color @ AMK Hub but they intro Sony T10 to me .... maybe shld pay them a visit again....
Thanks again

Hi radedward, thanks for yr infos too.

I've went down to ms color. Tried the ixus 850, one thing i dislike the camera is tht the screen flickers a lot. is tht common? hmm....
Anyway they also intro sony and olympus. I getting more and more confused.
As for fuji f31d, although the memory card cost more than those of ixus 850, but it is still affordable. wht to get???

btw again, rgds to fuji f31d on the video-taking quality. Is it good taking videos and i heard tht it is not zoomable. pls advise Thanks!!!

hi linkyfisto,

get the fuji f31d.

cheers,
z.

get f31fd. Picture quality is better than Ixus 850, a lot less noisy. Esp useful when u take night shots. Check out the promo at MS colour

Can try the Fuji, Sony T series and the Olympus. They are all very good. See which you prefer then get that lor.

T series has got veri nice outlook esp T100. But Pic quality wise I still prefer fuji colours. Somehow I find that Olympus pictures are more towards the yellowish side, meaning the colours are more towards yellow. Correct me if I'm wrong.
