Hi experts, I plan to get my first DLSR, but only got budget ard $1300, should i aim for those Kit set, like D40X, D80 and 400D? I am afraid that without buying good lens I may not able to exploit the best out of those excellent DSLRs... therefore, should I use like $500-$700 (like second hand D70s or D50) to get a not so hot DSLR and spend the rest on a hot lens (like tampron 17-55 F2.8)? really need you advice, thanks so much

your 1st DSLR? congratulations!

don't need to rush and buy everything
get the kit lens first and enjoy it

erm.. d80 kit is 2k+ not 1.3k. mayb 2nd hand body 1.3k.

erm... d70(s) used to be really hot. really.

...neither..for that kind of budget...i rather u buy a dv cam

you can get a D40x kit for 1300. less in fact.
and the tamron is 17-50, not 55. that's going for about 600+

you could get a D40 (without the x) and the tamron for about 1400 give or take so it's really up to you!

now 1.8k only meah? umm.. i thought i saw 2.2k the other day.

oops, actually my friend helps me check the price in HK, it cost ard $1500+ with AF18-135... tats y I put it into the range, heh ;)

headache, becuz I really have no idea how far I am going to go with DSLR...I am passionate with graphic and photoshop. I dont want get a good one and let it rest for most time... I really like D80 and D40X! Is it a waste to just use the kit lens??

i were u i'd get a 2nd hand DSLR and try your very best not to settle into the D40 as it only supports the newest ranges of lens. However should u decide that you need to have a new DSLR, my guess would be D40 would be a gd buy. Just my thoughts...

May I offer an alternative? Why buy the discontinued D70 or D50 or the crippled D40 when you can get the Pentax K100D with kit lens for about $1K and leave you with change to spare, or the K10D kit which fits your budget perfectly. Best feature is the in body shake reduction which works with any and every lens you use.

thanks for you thoughts! And lens support is the biggest concern for me to settle D40x, even though i am not sure whether it is really a problem...

May be can consider 2nd hand 20d ~ 1050 and tamron 17.50 2.8 new for 630. 350d or 400d also not bad.

Don't buy d40x or d40. You will regret by the choice of lens.

frm hk got warranty not? i dun think have ler... if u into graphic design, dun u think u need a good camera? i do freelance and i feel a good camera helps alot. esp. when u wanna incoporate products or pictures and items into the design...

my 2 cents, i say go for it. at least D40X. u can use the extra mp in case u do large prints

Pentax K100D @ Orient Photo for less than $900. With kit lens. Shake reduction. Second best resolution for any 6 MGP DSLR available today, second only to D40 (and yes, it can use autofocus lenses).

If you don't like the fact that they'd have to ship it back to China with any faults, then go to CP or AP or MS Colour, $1065 w/o GST last I saw.

-pushes the cam he uses these days- :bsmilie:

this is not a wise solution as both the d40s do not have AF motors built-in and thus you'll only end up being able to focus manually with the tamron 17-50.

(AF motor) screw you nikon.

i just got my first DSLR. i got a D70. i really dont regret it. i tried out canon and nikon and i chose nikon for its built and the buttons and menus seem more ergonomical. no top of that the lenses can be used on film bodies if you ever wanted to try.

anyway to cut the long story short, i recommend you get a d70 with a 50mm f1.8 to start off. if not get the kit lens, either the 18-55mm which cost about $130 2nd hand of you have alittle more money, get the 18-135mm which is the D80 kit lens.

the 18-135mm gives you good coverage in terms of zoom. the only pita is that the apertures arn't exactly large so you cant get handshake-free shots in low light compared to the 50mm f1.8.

the 18-55mm-II kitlens is very good. although not as wide.
compared to the 17-55, the sharpness is quite a good fight, at a price 10x less.
much better than my old 18-70, but you have to bear with how plasticky they feel vs a pro lens.
