Allo all proflashionials...i need some recommendations/suggestions/advice
for getting a DSLR.

Friend A recommended getting a Nikon D40x or a D80

Friend B recommends getting Canon cameras instead, saying focusing is better and faster, although Nikon maybe more sturdy and durable. Was eyeing the 30D, but it seems really expensive, heard 20D and 10D not that good.

Nikon seem to have only 3 models of flashes on sale, the camera shop dudes told
me last time those SB-something-something no longer in production.
And im not very familiar with Canon cameras. I need some information/advice

Requirement? My budget for a DSLR + kit lens , around $2k. (hopefully not more than 2.5k)
Used for outdoor urban exploration photography (will use both wide and zoom), travel photos, indoor work events, maybe some friends or relatives weddings if im paid the non-spoil market rate. Kaka

Thank you you!

Follow your heart.

Problem is ...i dun know what i want...i think i wanna stay safe and see what recommendations there are. Today i went down to the shops to ask...but the staff were like impatient, felt rather pressured to make a hasty buy if i stayed longer to ask more questions.
:(

save yr friend...tell him to get DV cam....

You've checked www.dpreview.com?

yes, for the D80 and D40x. But for Canon cams...not familiar...so i need to know what's reasonably good, so i can compare. Then go down to shop to check prices and compare pro and cons again. Haha

Ok, now i got a friend who has 3 new canon BP-11 (i think this is the model number) batteries to give me if i get a canon cam. He sold his cam long time ago, but couldnt find the batts in his home, only till recently...no use, so he's giving me those if i get a canon cam.

the only advantage i have if i get a Nikon cam, is i may have a flash SB-22 (can't remember), and Fe-10's 35-70mm lens (not sure if compatible with any dslr). Oh they are in one of my packed boxes somewhere....moving house...so i dun think i may find them anytime soon. hahaha :sweatsm:

so...yeah. Quite stumped. Haaa

Batteries shouldn't be a significant factor in buying a camera IMO o_O

Personally I'd get the EOS 5D over the D200, the D200 over the D80, the D80 over the D50, the D50 over the D40(x) :)

Features and build.

I was using EOS 10D for a number of years. In fact still using it alternating with 400D.

A few months ago saw a Harvey Norman ad selling 400D with a 18-55mm kit lens for A$1,200something. Just grabbed the credit card and rushed down to get it. For me it was a jump of 6MP to 10MP. But cable release, batteries and AC adapter all changed from 10D to 400D. Boh Pian.

I think a good point of 400D to me is the anti-noise function as I shoot a lot of long exposure stuffs. And contouring is lesser than 10D due to higher MP. Otherwise it is just another camera. For my type of work it is Air Sai lah. :)

Oh...how much roughly would a 5D cost, and the D200?
Funny, i didnt see any D50.

oh yah before i forget, for everybody...pls don't start a brand war or something here. Im just asking for advice, not needing assurance of their loyalty of brand's superiority over the other. Keke. Everybody friendly here lah, ok? Steady. :bsmilie:

Yeah i have alittle experience using the 10D...but not too satisfied with it's focusing...likely to go off, even if the camera says so its accurate. I think the one i was using got damaged or something. :p

Hmm...noise. I think i would be shooting quite a number of long exposures as well, at night. Hmmm....

Hmm, why nobody recommend the superb Pentax K10D? Just won TIPA Awards 2007.

Erm...im looking at Canon and Nikon, coz users for this two brands more common. Most of my friends are either using these two brands....so if i happen to urgently need to borrow stuff...easier. Rather than rushing out to buy, sometimes you wont know when you be caught in a tight budget situation.

A lot. The 5D is much more expensive than the D200. The 5D is a Canon, by the way. It's full frame, so standard film lenses can be used with it without having to take in the crop factor. Also a larger sensor size means much less noise. The D200 has more functions over the D80, including a weather sealed body. The high ISO performance might be lower than that of the D80 though, if I remember correctly. The D50 isn't made anymore, but you can still find one for cheap in the FS forums (or it's bigger brother, the D70,D70s) :)

The 5D and the D200 are both probably way over your budget new and with lens, I'd recommend the D80. My friend has it and it's performance is awesome (save slight menu lag). I particularly love it's large viewfinder. It's functions and versatility with regards to the settings is even more awesome.

I don't like the D40/400D/350D because of their size. Cameras that are too small feel uncomfortable to grip, and much less solid than a more conventional size. But that's just me.

Yah...i got big hands too...haha...u said it. Small cams...kind of hard to handle. I used to handle F90x with motordrive, and i find that comfy. Yah, 5D and 200D sounds way above my budget. :p

I remember once i borrowed a 350D or something, a Canon...spent a few hours looking for the controls to change aperture settings, checked online, to discover they had a design fault, so the user had to press another button and scroll the dial to change aperture. Sigh...terror lah that one.

and Friend C recommand you sticking to what you have~

hehehhehhehee.......

The technical aspect of both camp are similiar to each other in their respective classes. End of the day, which one feel more comfortable in ur hand? That the one you'll get.

*oh come on, u've been thru this before... long long time ago... do we have to go thru this again~?..........:p*

always go wif your feelings...muz got the feel of the force of the camera you are holding... so far now only D80 & A100 gimme the force i felt...:D

Anyone who posts request for recommendations for DSLR in a photo forum will end up feeling more befuddled, confused, uncertain, unhappy, unfulfilled, foolish, hopeless and suicidal than he is before asking.

Sun Tzu the great camera critic had said many times before:

"If you don't know what you need
You shouldn't buy a camera.
If you don't know what you want
You shouldn't come to Geylang."

Hope this helps. :bsmilie:

Alamak dude, be your own person. Go and try all brands and see the one you really like.

And not what your friends like.

Well, everyone has their own likings and there is no perfect camera. Consider what you want to shoot and the prices of the lenses. You will unlikely be sticking to your kit lens only. Get a feel of the different cameras and follow your heart to see which camera you like and you feel most comfortable in. Besides C & N, there are also other fantastic brands out there. Pentax, Sony, Olympus and Sigma also produce very good cameras. Best of all, Sony & Pentax have build in "Anti-Shake" in the camera body instead of the lenses. Go try them out before deciding.
