Compact Camera Comparison

Hi,


I will be visiting Europe in two months time and I hope to take very nice landscape pictures for memories.

I'm intending to buy a new company camera.
However, I cannot decide which camera to buy.

Can anybody suggest me a very cool camera?

I have read reviews from Cnet.

So far most of the recommendations is Canon Ixus 850.
But what I dun quite fancy is the control buttons at the back of the camera.

But these few days there are a lot of advertisement about this new Canon Ixus 70 and 75.
The price of these two are cheaper than the current selling price of Ixus 850.

But ixus 70 and 75 is of newer models. So does that mean Ixus 70 and 75 is of poorer quality than 850 since they're cheaper?

So far I only compare between Canon and Casio.

And also, I dunno how many pixels to get in order to have very sharp resolution of photos.

Can anybody give me some ideas and recommendation for a good compact camera?

My budget is less than $800.

Hi,

How about Casio Z1050? 10 mp. Zoom wide is 38mm. Which one is better ah? 38mm or 28mm?

Strongly recommend Canon over Casio... unless you're looking for something really really slim like the Exilims, otherwise Canon gives better quality and easier to handle. Hope this helps

Landscapes - you're talking about wide angle here. But if you don't like the IXUS, perhaps consider the PowerShot A series? A570 IS looks good to me!

there are only 2 compacts i would consider at present

1) Ixus 850IS - 28mm wide angle, decent ISO400 performance, IS. the ixus 70 and 75 are inferior to the 850IS

2) Fuji f31fd - 35mm normal FOV, excellent ISO 1600 performance, less shutter lag, great for night shots

chuck the casio aside. it's not worth any amount of money that you're willing to pay

Ya, With your budget, these can easily settled. Just make sure you go to the few recommended stores. The street price are usually at least 10-20% off the Recommended retail price. If you take more of the day and scenic, consider canon (and a small tripod for night scene). If you want to take more of indoor stuffs, get the Fuji. (Only the f30 or f31 models though).

Since your budget is about $800, might as well strech abit to get the Nikon D40, you should be able to get it for below $900. Although it is DSLR, it is quite small and when set to Auto mode, it functions like P&S except that can not view before shooting. You will not regret it.

F31 shines out very clearly.

I will advise AGAINST DSLR.. it's funny how easy ppl recommend to get DSLRs these days. DSLR is a different ball game compared to compacts. first of all the D40 or any smallest SLR for that matter, won't fit into my pocket compared to any of the P&S listed above.
Also, it's going to be a lot heavier that the compacts. I rather put my 150g P&S in my pocket and walk around while travelling than hang half a kg over my neck.


At $800, you stretch a little you get D40. hey why not stretch is just a little more and get a D80.. the by stretching just a tiny bit more you can get a D200..:think: a teeny bit more.. walla! D2x!!

Fuji F31 sells at $499 now. No need to stretch.

Yes, I would also advise against the advice for DSLR.

It isn't as easy as, hey let's just get a D40 and use it as P&S. Maintenance wise, are you willing to fork out for the extras you need?

If one isn't that interested in photography, at least not in the control sense, better to get a P&S, those are more suitable and catered to normal consumer use.

Just because a DSLR is cheap doesn't mean everyone might like it. Lagi best later you see the poor guy selling off the DSLR because it's not what he wants in the first place!
