Lens filter

Is UV filter necessary for digital camera? Are would it be best to get clear glass for protection only? I have read several post and articles on this issue and would like imput. When around my house and inside I don't use a filter but on field trips I do.

UV filters hardly make a difference, but theyre cheap, that's why people use them for protection.

For digital sensor, unlike film, InfraRed ray is more damaging than UltraViolet ray.

Yes, I use UV filter as a protection to all my lenses. B+W UV MRC filter to be exact.

buy one and put it on the lens and you can forget about the dangers of hitting the front element. Also you don't have to worry so much about the dust inside the front element.

The problem is that good filters are costly and cheap filters tend to disturb the IQ on an expensive lens. Solution? Shoot with your lens hood on at all times, take very good care of your lenses, and hope that nothing happens. Otherwise, it is well worth the extra money to get a good UV filter IMHO.

I own 3 B+W UV filters, 58mm, 67mm and 77mm and Hoya SMC 77mm, I prefer B+W because it is much easier to clean, the build quality is better also. It is a good investment. Never own Nikon NC filter so can't comment, but I guess it is close to B+W.

Only if you need protection from the elements (like salt spray or dirt) Against impact I believe the hood works better.

With a filter, you degrade the image quality, abeit slightly for the better ones to quite a bit for the low end ones. So note what you put on your lens. Is it really necessary. And get the best you can afford else you will really lower the IQ.

My NC filters work great!

But if u r worried abt more lens air interface and the flaring and stuffs i guess shooting w/o a filter is cool as well. Debate on filter or not is long standing, and we have not seen everyone agree and unlikely to happen
