Criticisms and comments nowadays...

i came into cs because i wanted to share my pics and at the same time pick up some good tips from fellow hobbyists.
initially when i joined cs, i didnt post much(because i hadnt gotten my Dslr), and i really did learn alot through the honest criticisms and such by looking at members' postings.

however of late, if you do visit portraiture folder, i see pics which are ...*how should i put it*....not up to a certain standard, and i see some members throwing encouraging comments/remarks.you know, the GOOD words and angel phrases.

i would like to ask you guys, do you think, by throwing such 'good' comments, it's going to help the fellow cser improve their photography skills?

everyone likes to hear the good stuff.me included.:embrass:
but whenever i post a pic, what i would love to hear are GENUINE,honest criticisms to help me improve.

i certainly hope CS will not degenerate into a forum where all the harsh, 'bad' but genuine,honest, frank comments are filtered, and frown upon.

and NO, i didnt started this thread because of the recent friction i had with leejay,lensbaby or the TS in the NIRA thread.

but this issue has really been bugging me, and it didnt helped when i logged in yesterday and saw DP's thread being locked.IIRC(i didnt read the entire thread), the point he wanted to put across was almost similar to what i have in mind.

i hope the moderators allow csers to speak their minds and not lock this thread.
and NO, this is not a flame bait thread and i do not wish to engage with anybody over mindless squabbles.so please, if you have any personal issues with me, pm me.

Jeanie, you have to remember that CS is open to EVERYONE.

If I am of a low standard, and I see a photo of a low standard but it seems nice to me..

I -am- being honest when I say I think it is nice!

What is art? What is good? I'm sure there are obviously BAD photos, and I'm also sure no one wants P&P to turn into sggirls.com, but honestly, what regulation can you do for such things without hindering the idea of FREE EXPRESSION with regards to "works of art" (bad or good)?

Well, there's no choice. I think "how to learn" would be to really screen the comments by yourself. I mean there ARE substantial amounts of people around who take the time and effort to really present their POV regarding a photograph (e.g. eikin, DP when he's in a good mood, espion to name a few). And we all have to take everything posted here with a pinch of salt anyways. =/

Of course there will be people with easily inflated egos. But that is life. They will then post massive amounts of not-so-good photos and be rewarded with joy and squeals from the members who welcome skimpy babes (like yours truly <3).. Conditioned response.

i do landscapes too.but only overseas...not singapore wor.

i use to visit other sections.but i'm a portraiture person.
i do landscapes if i travel, and recently got a macro lens.

to a person who is really mindful and sincere about the comments he/she is receiving, even a bad & lousy comment made with the most vicious of intentions can be turned into something constructive. or at least, a test of one's patience and character.

if one is just interested in receiving candypop comments, so shall it be. perhaps the baby in him/her needs to be tempered first.

For some people, no matter how polite the critique or constructive comment is, they will still take it the wrong way. Thankfully he is now dearly departed - but his sidekick is still around.

sometimes, frank and outspoken comments are pretty much being frowned on.
dp's comments is a good example.
