I got mine for a week now. Like it a lot. Never used iPod before so cannot compare.

Was looking at the 80GB HDD mod on www.zunemods.net and have to say that I am quite tempted...;p

I'm a sucker for long battery life. If I got $ I dump my Creative Zen Neeon (30h battery life) and get that kinky Sony new one with 50h battery life.

How's the Zune anyways? What do you like about it?

Hmm... there are lotsa limitations on the Zune (I heard, like 1 time copying, extreme limitations when sharing, etc) to the point it turned me off completely.

Still, I've got iPods ever since its first incarnation. My 3rd MP3 player? Still an iPod. Got so used to the brand liaoz, lazy to change oso to be honest. :bsmilie:

But I managed to salvage the harddisk and it's now got a second lease of life as a portable harddisk.

I thought the selling point of the Zune is it's ability to network and share music? How do you find that feature?

If you buy a Zune, you deserve exactly what you bought.

Hehe...definitely don't want to turn this into a thread where people come in to bash the Zune while I try to defend it.

The limitations are not as bad as you have described, from my perspective at least. I use my own MP3s ripped from my CDs, so there is no problem in using those MP3s on the player. Have not tried buying digital music online from Zune Marketplace or any other sources yet, so can't comment on that. The software only allows you to transfer music from PC into the player but not get music out of the player onto the PC. Sounds reasonable to me because of copyright concerns, and does not bother me because I don't plan to share my MP3s with others. Anyway someone already found a registry hack to get around that limitation.

As for wireless sharing, music can be transferred wirelessly from one device to another but can only be played 3 times on the receiving device, and cannot be re-transferred or relayed to a 3rd device. Again, does not affect me as that is not the main reason I bought it (even though Microsoft thinks that is the killer feature).

What I liked about Zune was the bigger screen (than my H320), good looks, video and photo playback with automatic landscap orientation (found free software to convert my DVDs to WMVs), FM tuner, user interface (more intuitive than H320), and very cool car kit (power adapter and FM transmitter). Also, the firmware is updated automatically (if available) when you are connected and synchronizing.

Hopefully future upgrades will enable wireless sync'ing.

Zune cannot be used as an external HDD, but there are some registry hacks that could have allowed that.

I have not tried the wireless transfer yet. Not really important for me.

Don't think the "bashing" you have quote has any grounds. For me, I based my decision to buy the Zune on various online reviews, talking to people who have actually used the Zune, and careful consideration of how the player meets my needs.

I don't think it is the absolute best digital player in the word, but it is the one that works best for me.

Well, I don't really send individual MP3 files back and forth. If anything, I hook up my USB cable and transfer whole albums.

I prefer/need the unrestricted file copy operations on the iriver series. (I use my H120 as a portable HDD)

Like u'd said, MP3 player is a personal choice and use thing. On a personal perspective, the limitations are simply within one's mind and personal use. Well, people scream about the iPod not being able to transfer MP3s on the iPod to HDD. But I rarely do that, so it doesn't affect me similarly.

On a tech perspective, well, those are serious limitations.

It all depends on where one is looking the apple from. It can either be green or red. Peace.

The orientation sensor is pretty interesting and current iPods do not really have such a feature (except the upcoming iPhone). I'm not too sure abt the user interface since it appears pretty strange to me.

BTW, what WLAN protocol has the Zune got? 802.11b (11mbps), 802.11g (56mbps) or 802.11n (100mbps)? Wireless sync sounds nice as well, if there's anything I'm cussing my iPod on, its the photo transfer feature which can only be done on iTunes and not iPhoto. Groan.....

I started this reply on the offensive but then I thought I wouldn't be fair to Toshiba just because their design failed to capture any attention. And of course the bashing hasn't got any grounds, its Craig Ferguson for crying out loud!

Anyway I'm just wondering ..... you said you've never used an ipod before. Did you mean you've never tried - as in not touched/listen to one before just never owned?

Over Christmas, I was in the market of an MP3. Finally tired of portable CD player. So, I have absolutely no expectation and preconceived notions which is the best.

The final candidates were the iPod and the Zune. Creative was not in the running, too difficult to use.

The final decision was based on user interphase. I found the iPod much easier to use, thanks to their wheel pad. So I got an iPod.
