Prosumer to DSLR

Hi Guys,

I am currently using the SONY H5. I thought of moving on to DSLR because of the image quality and I like to shoot at night without using the flash, hence it is important for a high ISO with less noise. The pictures currently I have taken are quite nosiy, color not very neat and sharp.

Not sure if it is justifiable to get an DSLR. Need you advice.

that means, i will need to reduce mu shutter speed and there will be movement blur.

With regards to noise in your sensor, there are tons of ways to minimize noise on your current camera (w/o flash), you'll just need learn more about your camera & photography techniques and how you apply those features already in there when you take a low light shot.
Color & sharpness I can't comment cos I've never liked Sony for any product (never have and never will) and have yet to touch, much less use a Sony camera. This is just my personal choice & biase towards the brand, nothing else.

If you have the money to splurge on a dslr, by all means do so; but just be aware that having a better camera does not equal to getting you better pictures. It's still the person behind the camera that counts in the end.

DSLR is the way to go. No way can your current sony allow you push ISO to 3200 with managable noise and mount on a fast F1.2-1.8 lens

Hmmm...Thanks Guys. I will get the Canon 400D. As it has the best ISO performance to keep the ambiance of the night lightings original.

Where do you think can get a good price?

Oh yea...another think to note....Since I am using a Sony Prosumer cam, it has a image stabilizer feature. I understand that the DSLR do not have such feature. So do I have really have to increase the shutter speed as compared to my prosumer camera to reduce the camera shake blur?

IS only compensate for ur hand shake and not motion blur due to subject moving, which u can counter by panning. rule for average person is to use 1/(focal length) u are shooting at. But it is subjective depending on the user. I have seen handheld 1s decent shots. Otherwise canon has IS lens, which i have non in my collection as they are a waste to me.

That means that if you are using a 300mm effective zoom, then your shutter speed should not be slower than 1/300 s. If you are using a 50mm effective zoom, your shutter speed should not be slower than 1/50s.

You can get the cost of IS lens all over the individual brand threads.

Don't burst a blood vessel hor, I also very itchy want to upgrade to Pentax K100D but I look at the lens prices and think about how I won't want to shoot with kit lens only for a long long time and then I decided to save up longer first. :bsmilie: :bsmilie:

Not sure if you actually want to get a DSLR for that sole purpose - but if you -are- indeed serious about photography, I suppose it's a sooner or later thing, so long as your finances are solidly in place. =D =D =D If not, can always grab a Fujifilm.. F30 la, F20, 6500FD all got quite solid high ISO performance. Definitely never as good as DSLR.. But not too shabby, from what I've seen.

Also, if you're so anti-tripod.. Use monopod lor!

Just a reminder... dSLR have its limitation as well... when its too dark even with a fast f2.8 lens + ISO1600, sometimes it ain't enough.

not nessessary to use dslr to have a nice night "citylight" shot. I was just using a small Fujifilm DL ... when i was a kid. Fujifilm is excellent in quality but design is not there. Pity i dont like the S3 Pro, S5 Pro interfaces..

Bro,

For the image stabalizer, you may want to look at Pentax K10D/ Sony's Alpha (they took over Konica/ Minolta's SLR Division)/ Olympus (not sure if they have).

From what I know, those cams have the image stabaliser, hand-shake reduction, etc built into the cam. Thus, no need to build such features into the lens. So their lenses of a similiar grade to Canon/ Nikon costs lesser.

As for the topic on tripod - I think it does have it's merits. Like you could set a timer on the cam (which is on a tripod) to release the shutter - confirm no shakes, so need not buy IS/ VR lenses :bsmilie:.

For me, I have been having loads of fun going out with my other half, snapping photos of us (with a remote) without the help of passers-by.

Since I am using a Sony Prosumer cam, it has a image stabilizer feature. I understand that the DSLR do not have such feature.

1. There is a comparative review on many online review sites, such as dpreview.

2. In general, the H5 outperforms the S3IS. The main benefit of the S3IS is the tilting LCD.

3. Don't buy it at the PC show. The H7 and H9 are coming out already.

4. If you want to save money, buy an H1/H2/H5 off the marketplace section.
