What is 300 DPI?

I want to sent a (blur) pix from my India trip to PhotoVideo Magazine for them for critic, so I learn where I do wrong with this pix. The requirement is 300DPI...what is 300DPI?

My original pix (in full size) is 4.28MB.. so what should I do to meet the 300DPI?:angel:

Do a google search for "DPI" and you'll get "Dots per inch". You can set this property in PhotoShop.

whats the point of knowing 300DPI, but dono the size of the print? you will still not know how big(pixel) they are asking for

No. By default, your pic is usually 72 DPI.

Try this:

1. Right-click on a picture in windows and select "Properties"
2. Select the "Summary" tab.
3. Make sure the "Advanced" option is selected

You should be able to see your horizontal and vertical DPI.

If 1.5" by 1", then 450x300 = 0.135 Megapixels would be 300 DPI already and the file would probably be about 50KB only.

If 6" x 4", then 1800x1200= 2.16 Mega pxiels would be 300 DPI and the file would probably be about 800KB.

300 dpi is the printing photo quality requirement. It also means if you want to print photo quality (very clear and details), you need to print in 300 dpi.

So how do we calculate ?
300 dpi
= 300 dots per inch
which means 1 inch there are 300 dots

If you want to print 4R which is 6 inches X 4 inches ( or 6" x 4"),
= (6" x 4") x 300
= 1800 x 1200 dots or pixels

if your D80 is set at jpg large fine, pixel size is 3872 x 2592, by printing at 300dpi, your image can print up to 12.9" by 8.6", slightly better bigger than S8R, you can print up to 10" by 15" straight out from your camera also (@ 250dpi, the lowest lab requirement).

if you intend to print any size smaller than this and do not need to re crop the images or any touch up, color correction etc, you can just sent to image file straight for print.
