Chingay will be passing by Simei itself at night so I wanted to try take some shots at that time.

I have Canon EOS 400D and EF28-135mm IS lens. I have no external flash.

Instead of me trying for trial and error, is there any initial settings that I should set before I start shooting?

What should I look out for as a newbie? Maybe I should get an external flash too?

bee there early to get a good spot

Increase your ISO, use the biggest aperture, and practise panning your shot. An external flash would useful for your subjects as the reach is longer than the pop up flash, but would not help in capturing the dark background.

Try shutter speed priority (Tv), set to 1/30sec to 1/125sec depend on focal length, high ISO and internal flash on.

come to Fengshan 85 market around 5+pm to start playing since it ends at simei...
at least you can start with evening light first instead of going straight to night if you dun feel comfortable.
so near anyway.

If you could buy/borrow a fast prime like a 85f1.8 that would help a lot, depending on how far the performers are and the kinds of shots you want (i.e. floats / overview), a cheap 50f1.8 may be useful as well.

Is there a need to 'borrow' a high mm lens like 300mm? I may want to get an external flash.

BTW, will anyone be at Simei?
