oh wow...1989...i think it would have changed a lot since then!

well i wouldn't mind going with a friend but they all don't seem too keen on it so i might just do it alone or with a tour group.

was it a difficult climb? i hear it takes about two weeks back and forth including acclimatisation time.

You are doing the trek from the North (Tibet) or the south (Nepal)?

either way.. you got to be very fit to do it. either by trekking or vehicle it's very tough. My friend went and ended up with 3 days of headache due to altitude sickness. My tibetan guide while I was in tibet advised me against going as well because he says it's really tough and even he finds it hard to cope..

geez, i hope u hav been training physical & mentally for past few months. hav u been on casual hikes to Malaysia or regionally for a start?

Has anyone done this trek before?

I'm interested in going end of this year and would like some shared opinions/experiences.

I have a friend who is keen to go and looking for kaki. I think she's looking at April or so. PM me your contact if you are keen to hook up with her

i'll be heading to EBC (Tibet side) this June, alone also.
taking the usual Lhasa/Gyantse/Shigatse/Rongbuk route.

do take more time to acclimatize in Lhasa first I guess.
i'll be in Sichuan for abt 2wks before that at abt 3000m before getting the train from Chengdu to Lhasa.
so... hopefully that'll help.

though i've never been there before, all i can advise u is not to be garang and attempt these kinda things alone. safety in numbers.

if u need guide contacts u can let me know
i have a friend who has guide contacts there. Comfortable priced too.
pm me
I am also planning a trip up this June but not too sure about it now as i am not able to get a block of at least 11 days free =(

Llhasa is chicken feet. you can't acclimatise much over there IMO ;p

not alone as in ALONE, but in a 4WD with other travellers.
too expensive to go all alone anyway.

gangeslim -- when do you intend to be there?
i'm planning a 29-day trip including China (Jiuzhaigou/Huanglong/SongPan) + Lhasa and travelling out to EBC (7-9 days).

i'm pleasantly surprised to know there are other S'poreans planning to go too :)

Oh...I made that very mistake of underestimating altitude sickness. Spent the first day in Lhasa running around with a backpack, searching for a hostel. Had a splitting headache that night. It was quite miserable. We even had to resort to buying those canisters of oxygen with the plastic tubes running to the nose to get enough supply of air. It was painfully hilarious!

Been there in 2005, great experience --> Some photos

Great photos, Tomshen!

My 6 day trip to EBC was almost entirely cloudy and grey, with frequent hailstorms along the way. When we finally reached the Everest Base Camp, the entire face of Mt Everest was obscured by thick clouds. I almost wanted to cry.
But after a patient few hours wait, the clouds miraculously parted slightly for a minute to reveal the famous triangular summit of the mountain. You can imagine how many photos I snapped in that one minute!
