what difference does this make to having a large strip light or large soft box?will there really be significant difference?

I do believe if you have already bought the book by Christopher Grey, this topic is discussed in Chapter 2 under light modifiers.

If you are thinking of building a DIY light tent, you can use PVC water pipes and white translucent nylon fabrics. Use velcro stripes to secure the fabric to the pipes. You can obtain all materials from Sungei Road and Jalan Sultan Textile Centre.

wat lens do u guys usually use for portraits?
after trying studio for 2 days, i find 50mm the most usable.
i would like to use 105dc but realised i have to move further back.
bokeh aint important in studio portraits right?:dunno:

There's nothing to bokeh in studio leh... :bsmilie: Use prime lens all the way!!!

Alot of ppl actually use zooms for studio work, something in the range of 50-100 would be 135 would be good, depending on your crop factor. IQ from zooms and primes would be rather similar in most studio scenarios since you will be normally shooting at F8-F16. I personally love the 85mm, but it's abit hard to do full body lengths and I'm already backed up to the wall :bsmilie:

not true entirely.
if i'm shooting head shot with her body straight towards into the frame, her head would be in focus whereas i would like her back and butt and legs to be OOF.so, in this case, bokeh still doesnt matter?

this weekend, i'm going to try shooting at WIDE OPEN to isolate features on face.
i may be going in the wrong direction of studio portraiture, but isnt photography suppose to break the rules?:dunno:

135 no way.though my room big enough, but i will be standing too far away.
i think you are right.50-100 is a good range, but i end up using 50 1.4 most of the time.

i'm just finding excuse to use my 105dc thats all.:bsmilie:

I used to use a 300mm for studio portrait can you imagine that!!! That is 300mm lens on a 4X5 view camera.

Seriously, I will suggest that you use prime lenses if possible. My all time favourite portrait lens is the AF Nikkor 85mm f1.4D.

i was reading chris grey master lighting guide.
but do not really understand loop and close loop lighting.

the way i see it, close loop means the lighting from the nose blends into shadows under the cheeks?(read cheeks, not jaw)?am i correct?

i reallyyyyyyyyyyyyy dunno... this is all theory lor.. i never go photography school one, and in my watever little reading i did online or on magazines i never heard or read or remembered anything about loops.

u know that rembrant thing? that triangle thing.. when i read about it i was like HAR?? like that also can ar? put on triangle there then call it such an attas name. ok lor.....

i suck in the studio. honestly.. if i had a big shoot (read : highly paid job) in a studio, i can still shoot, but i would hire a competent lighting assistant. i won't touch a single light, but i can tell him/her wat i want. ;p
