Singapore Price Guide - KM & KM-Compatible Lens

Sigma 50-500mm EX/DG at John's for $1820. i just did a little more research on this and discovered that most of the Sigma (after 70-200) telephotos with HSM are actually for C, N, P. For A-mount they are non-HSM, although it seems to be the common (mis)understanding...
i tested the 50-500 on my 7d, AF in poor FC indoor lighting was still ok at the far end, although a tad slow with subjects around 10-15m. anyone have an opinion on this lens?

FYI, none of the Sigma lenses for A mount are HSM capable cos by the time KM came out with SSM, there was no market left for Sigma to reverse engineer the SSM concept and sell it in their Sigma HSM format.

so the only real fast lenses from 400mm up for the A-mount are KM lenses? (dare not even think of CZ ones)

In fact at any range... but most of the 3rd party lenses have decent AF speed too...

whats decent for birding? any recommendations? my sigma 135-400 is not fast enough, sometimes it overfocusses especially against a clear sky and the AF hunting is a real pain as it tries and tries to lock on.

tried the sigma 50-500 but that doesn't seem to perform much faster than the sig135-400 or sig70-300. guess its the non-hsm issue. so what would work?

thanks bro, i've 3 500mm mirror lenses but find them too soft even at f8. at f11 it starts to look ok but then with the amout of light-loss *sigh*... really serious about getting the km 300 2.8 ssm unit, or worst case, fork out more $ for $ony version (SAL20 or something like that). i dropped by the sony centre at wisma on Friday but didn't see a unit plus the sales ppl there really suck... anyone with a km300 2.8 ssm to offload? :)

Getting AF focus locked on a small bird against a bright clear sky is difficult for any setup. For long telephoto shots, a lot of practice is needed to be able to point the camera so as to get the bird in the frame immediately because of the magnification and a narrow 5-8 degree view. If you use continuous AF, it will just keep hunting to infinity and back and forth, thus making it difficult to lock on when you have the bird in your focal point. When you use AF, you need to use spot focusing and ensure the centre focusing point is on the bird (to give it a target) before you half-press the shutter. Primes will make it easier to use hyperfocal focusing first followed by fine-tuning manually.
You should be able to use your lens with practice. If you want something faster and reasonably priced, try the Tamron SP AF200-500. It's inner focusing mechanism only takes a 1/4 turn to go from its min. focal distance of 8ft to infinity and thus is faster to regain focus if the bird keeps flying out of the frame. It is also light enough to be hand-held which would be what you will be doing mostly for inflight shots. Here's some pics:

Except for the one where I indicated I used the beercan, all were taken with the Tamron 200-500mm.

If you are prepared to accept 3rd party, Geno was thinking of selling his Tamron SP AF 300 f2.8. No ssm etc but it comes with a focus limiter which would be useful.

sorry, i never touch a mirror lens before. i thought is fixed aperture? how to f11?
The f-stop listed for a lens does not mean it is fixed at that aperture. That is only an indication of the biggest aperture you can open up to. For example, my 300 f2.8 will allow me to use any aperture between f2.8 and f32.

mmm..
But for mirror lens, the aperture is fixed, at least for Minolta AF 500 reflex (f8) that i had once.

 oh no! you mean can change aperture one ah? i keep wondering why those 2.8 lens are so expensive, compared to those 3.5-5.6 kind can choose different aperture and zoom some more.

heehee joking only lah. i know can stop down, but my impression is that mirror lens has a fixed aperture because of the way it's constructed, so wondering how to get f11 on an f8 lens.

I never owned or used a reflex mirror lens and assumed that it would be the same as normal lenses. Just checked and found you guys are right that it indeed allows only one aperture setting at f8. That would certainly be a serious restriction of its uses.

oops... paiseh... just checked, yup, its fixed at f/8. got it confused with my other mf lenses.. that's how long i haven't used them!

thanks bro, yup i use spot focussing, the only thing that irritates me is the AF hunting, takes forever... any idea on Tamron 200-500 pricing and availability?
