multi point AF

Hi Guys,

Can anyone suggest a good reading on those 3 point, 9 point auto focus? What are the advantages and applications? Because so far I've used powershot (3 pt), lumix (9 pt). But I always forced to them to 1 pt auto focus.

Should it be really a deciding factor when buying a cam? Because now I'm confused whether to buy D40 or 400D. Will it make a difference using 3pt against 9pt AF?

depends if you use them... personally i think 5points is more than enough if all the points are placed at the impt spot (center + interception of one-third rule)... but too bad, so far i think none of the camera does that.

i would say 3pts is more than enough, as some user only stick with center AF point and do AF lock before recomposing

A lot of photographers use the above method so personally I feel the number of AF points should not be a main consideration in buying a DSLR. More importantly is the weight and the feel. The difference between 3-points and 9-points is just a reflection of how "lazy" a photographer is in determining focus.

it simply means you got a option to focus on more places without using the tradition method of focus > focus lock > recompose.

One of the advantage of having more focus point is when your camera is mounted on the tripod and you do not wish to adjust the camera position any further. Having more focus points is really useful in such situations.

so you saying the more points people uses...the more lazy they are...then why canon 1D series got so many points??

i have a 45 AF-pt camera and i use the middle AF point 90% of the time
