What will you do if u found that a very competent worker used fake degree to get into your company?
Is honesty is more impt than being competent?

As long as he is competent, fake or real degree doesn't matter?

Be fair to other employees?

Poll coming!

Degree doesn't matter. Honesty does.

my gut reaction: If you aren't honest and have been deceptive, then how can you be trusted?

Would have fired the person, but since he/she is competent and had been performing, will give him/her a face saving exit.

The question to ask is, other than the degree, what else are lies?

Let me OT a bit here and invite some flaming.

Why did the person, who obviously can do the job, need to lie? After living in Asia for a while, I have noticed, all too often, more weight are put on what degree/piece of paper you have than experiences/your real ability to do the job. I am having an on going fight with HR about of of my direct reports, whom I trained, brought up to speed and are doing a great job, and I am trying to promote them, but they do not have a university degree and have the wrong diploma.

In this case he's not honest, so fire him even though he's competent? Or are there any alternatives?

It's a personal thing. People evaluate human resource and prioritize differently. I prioritize honesty over competency. And in fact, my criteria for competency includes honesty. I don't want to have to design the work in a way that honesty can be compromised.

wah. u all dun want him to stay in your company. now he will be jobless. poor thing...

but at least none of you are so bad as to want to charge him in court huh

I agree with you. Some companies place too much value on paper qualifications. If the person has proven themselves to be competent; the qualification shouldn't matter in considering promotions. The sad (and stupid) thing is that most companies in spore don't have that type of policy. A promotion to a higher position is often tied to the person's qualification.

PS: Please don't confuse this with the fake degree. They are two different situations.

It's a hypothetical situation to begin with. And 'fake degree' is right there in bold in the title of the thread. How can it be a separate situation?

If I run the company, I will value competency over qualification. But I will value honesty over competency.

Honesty/ Integrity come first...

I will ask the fellow to resign.

Haha... Welcome to Asia, or rather Singapore. Where the 'toilet' paper has more weight than experiences and skills.

I was working in a GLC Telco, performing very well and well-like by my peers and bosses, but stuck there, could not move any higher because I do not have the require papers... so, I quit.

And now, have to do part-time study to get the papers, so to earn more money to put bread on the table for my family.... sigh...

Fully agreed with you. It's a sad fact in Singapore even in cs.
Paper qualifications precede over experience and competency.

if a person is a competent work, he/she would not need to fake a degree to get the job

Well, the competency on the job the fellow has may have come by through experiences even though he/she do not have the degree. Still the issue here is that the fellow use a fake degree. So, that's besides the point whether he/she is competent or not.

Without honesty/ integrity, this competent employee may even be competent enough to screw up the company or take over your job.

What I meant as a separate situation, is the promotion of a competent worker without considering their qualifications (as DP has described in post 5).

This would be different from the situation where a worker (competent or not) has been found to have used a fake degree to apply for the position.

if a person is a competent work, he/she would not need to fake a degree to get the job

In Singapore, without the paper, the person will not even get a chance for interview much less to prove/show that he is a competent worker.

True true.... how very true this is in Singapore.. sad, but true.

Yep, extremely sad, but true. And as one climb to higher echelons, it's no longer degree vs no degree. It becomes Masters vs Degree. PhD vs Masters. This uni vs that uni. Competency often takes a back seat.

So I'm also distraught over the fact that the emphasis on papers are so strong.

Nevertheless, I love the Durai example. To speak the truth, I have heard many willing people who will use Durai. He had done a pretty amazing job in being able to get so much money for NKF. To these organisations, profit is the most important, so they place honesty on the second place.

For other organisations, they rather not have a time bomb waiting to explode by their side.

i have seen
people with qualifications but not competent ,
people without qualification but competent ,

the difference comes when the salary is dished out , the 1 with qualifications gets more,

so looking at people that submitting fake degrees is not a surprise to me , but the market is even worst off when the CV indicates some other experience which the applicant did not have. these type is the killer group as a good touch up on the cv will land them in a higher paying job.

i have seen alot in that does this, so i always wonder if honesty is really that important after all.
