SINGAPORE: Come January 24th, visitors to Empress Place in Singapore will get a rare opportunity to view BMW cars designed by legendary artists such as Andy Warhol and Roy Lichtenstein.

Australia's Ken Done used parrots to symbolise the beauty and speed of a car on a BMW M3 in 1989.

One of the founders of pop art, Roy Lichtenstein, used painted lines to leave his stamp on a BMW 320i, racing at Le Mans in June 1977.

A BMW 3.0 CSL was designed by Frank Stella in 1976 where he used graph paper patterns to accentuate each curve of the vehicle.

"Warhol was very spontaneous. He acted on a whim. He spontaneously did things that shocked a lot of people. So in that sense, maybe it's not much of a surprise. Warhol liked to work with brand names, with objects we see everyday in our lives. So cars just fell into place. So, what he was doing was making that car, the object of our everyday use, into a piece of art," said Matin Tran, BMW art car exhibition consultant, Singapore

The cars are part of a 15-car collection by BMW. It has commissioned a Swedish artist to design the 16th BMW art car.

After Singapore, the cars will be heading to the Ayala Museum of Manila in the Philippines.

Meanwhile, another four BMW art cars will be touring Taiwan, China, Russia and Africa. - CNA
