Raw to resolve noise ?

Hi,

I have been wanting to get the FZ50 but was concern with the noise beyong ISO 200 (this is according to the review), but in the review, it was also mentioned that shooting RAW will resolve the noise problem. This is the first time I came across such a suggestion, is this true?

no, not noise problem... but water effect noise reduction problem.

Using RAW format will avoid the jpeg compression and noise reduction algorithm employed in the camera because you will do the jpeg compression, noise reduction and other adjustments (such as WB etc.) in the software on your Personal computer.

In the case of FZ50, the noise level is high because of the small CCD image sensor and the sensor technology employed. To reduce the appearance of noise in the pictures (in jpeg) at very high ISO, FZ50 employs a heavy noise reduction algorithm which causes a great loss of sharpness and details in the pictures, resulting in an effect which resembles water colour painting when shot at very high ISO.

So, the way around to avoid the heavy noise reduction employed by the FZ50 is to shoot in RAW so that you do your own noise reduction and jpeg compression.

So the answer to your question is : Shooting RAW will not reduce the noise level but will enable you to employ your own noise reduction level and have control over noise vs details in the final picture.
