I got a D80 and intend to go "shooting" in India in Mid January (2 weeks). I noe that I need a portable HDD (with card reader). How to choose, what is the price? Can rent (trying)?

PD70X CompactDrive is quite good, but a bit bulky. Check out the Services Offer/Wanted thread, there is at least one who will rent the PD70X.

Other that I know are Nexto and Vosonic (all can be found at East Gear) and if your budget allow, you can check out the new storage device from Canon, the M30 & M80 or from Epson, the Ep-3000 & Ep-5000.

I think all portable HDD storages are good. It is the matter of how to handle them well.

India which part? North India or South India?
hehe, i still find laptop and card reader better...
Can review ur pics with big screen ^^
Rmb to get ur travel adaptor..check the net for what type India is using..

Enjoy your trip! ^^

quick qn..i realised that most of the usb cables come with 1 big head and 1 small head...small one for the device (camera/card reader/ hard drive) and big for pc.. any cable with 2 small heads? and if have..can i direct trf to hard drive from 30d?

You can get adapters for the "big" to "small" "head" but you can't just connect a USB hard disk to a camera because a camera is expecting a host PC on the other end, same for the USB HDD.

To TS: sorry for OT.

For myself, I have a digimate(the cheapo portable HDD) with 40gb.
Been using for 2 years plus and countless transfer.

Oh, I can't remember when was the last time I charge??? Battery seems to last forever or maybe it charge itself when I plug into usb. ;)

Agree on the battery part  Lasting forever

Get two portable hard disk for your travel.

One HDD in your day pack and the other HDD in your hotel.

"Two is one and one is none".

When travelling, I'll carry my Epson P2000 in my daypack and a NEXTO CF in the hotel. I would recommend the NEXTO CF as it is much more lighter than the PD70X.

HTH.

eh P2000 is a portable hard drive rite, then how u direct transfer? Cos i was thinking for travel trips, i may not wanna lug my laptop along..the only 2 options are tonnes of CF or a hard drive

i have a pd70x but its practically brand new. with today's CF prices its probably better to buy extra CF cards as they are hardier (as opposed to sensitive hdds), lighter and more compact (by a few hundred times!!!!!!) and don't require you to carry adapters/ batteries.
