PlayStation 3: Late, expensive, and incompatible

When it was announced in spring 2005, the Sony PlayStation 3 was going to be the greatest thing to hit home gaming since a hedgehog named Sonic. Then came the delays. By the time the PS3 arrived, it was six months late, and Nintendo's cheaper and more innovative Wii had stolen much of its thunder. At $599 for the 60GB model, the PS3 is twice the price of the original PlayStation 2, yet research firm iSupply -- which describes the PS3 as having supercomputer qualities--estimates that Sony still loses more than $200 per unit.

Thanks to manufacturing delays, Sony shipped an estimated 150,000 units for the North American launch, or less than half the number it had originally planned. And the PS3 was incompatible with more than 200 PlayStation and PS2 games, though Sony is addressing that problem through online updates.

The good news? Game-crazed youth are buying up PS3s and reselling them on eBay for double the asking price. And unlike, say, Sony batteries, they don't catch fire...at least, not yet.

Big mistake: Trying to turn a supercomputer into a gaming device.

Bigger mistake: Failing to drive a stake through the heart of Nintendo when the opportunity offered.

I hope Wii will have a Starwars like game on it. With the lightsabers :bsmilie: imagine twisting and turning in front of the tv and hiding behind the sofa if you are being overrun :bsmilie:

you guys action pack gamers leh... Wii turns me off with the need of big actions... have to really swing the controller in order to swing the blade...

think it's kinda juvenile to go around going 1-0 to this system or that system. Xbox 360 had been out for very long and it's maturing as a system. The Wii is a very innovative system and i think it's very much the first or second fave to many. but it remains to be seen if it can win back the 3rd party support the gamecube lacked. PS3 looked a bit too much of a bloated, over-ambitious piece of hardware at launch but if the developers got their grips on it and start using it's full capability, we could see some incredible games that only Xbox720 could hope to match. As for the loss made on each console sold, Sony is taking a risk but a calculated one in order to sneak a Blue Ray player into every household. If Blue Ray succeeds, they would be the ones laughing. And dun forget, the PS2 was so popular, it didn't drop much in price till now. And the parts would get cheaper with time so they would soon break even as production capability goes up.
For me, I find most of the games on Xbox unappealing. I do play FPS but it's not my fave genre. I am more interested in RPGs and some innovative quirky games that the Japanese are so good at. So i'm keener on the Wii or Ps3. And if Ps2 is any guide, the sony systems would remain a nice compromise between mainstream and quirky games. The Xbox seemed to cater mainly to the mainstream crowd (but must admit viva pinata is a nice twist though still not the most original) while nintendo systems tended to lack many mainstream games.
For me, I'm waiting and seeing. Currently still looking at PS3 as first choice and the Wii as second. And I know many are doing the same. If you have the Xbox360, enjoy the system for what it is. It's a great system. Dun need to feel good bashing other systems.

The Bleach promo video for Wii looks awesome man. My wife's stopping me from the obsession by buying me a DS, haha. DS is great. Can't say it's working in making me think less abt Wii though.;p

wait till you try Zelda :bsmilie:

But Gundam: Target in Sight is a fantastic piece of creation. Console games are nice but then they still dont come close to the new arcade games that they have here. RTK and Gundam cardbuilder. Gundam: Bonds of the Battlefield.
