Hallo... which bokeh is better for these 2 lenses?

since the price is quite close, which you prefer? and why?

haha..... this poll reminds me of my thread on which lens has better bokeh...85 f1.4 or 105 f2..... haha.. :bsmilie:

I voted 50/1.4 because there isn't an AF version of 50/1.2. For 85/1.8, there is still an 85/1.4, so that will start to bug me... ;p

That aside, it really depends on whether you're shooting film or DX, what kind of shots you're going for and the working distance you have.

What would you like in your shooting?
- half body
- head shoot

Agreed with u bro... was going to type that question in too... hehe...... using my 85 f1.4 and i wanna shoot the whole body mostly... i need to stand quite far away.... hehe....

Usually i shoot both leh? definitely not full body.

any reason you ask this question? for me, half body and head shots are the same leh :dunno:
Half body and head shots are quite different leh. Half body down to waist, head is down to neck.

i can only afford these 2 lenses, not f1.2 or 85mm f1.4 :dunno:

By the way, i am using D70s and i like to shoot close up portrait. (mostly half body or head shot)

The other part of my question is how much working distance do you have? If you don't have space to back off to take half body, or you prefer to work closer to the subject for easier communication, then I'd suggest you go with the 50/1.4 since you're shooting DX.

Also, you know you're already getting the best of the AF 50mm, for the 85mm, the f/1.4 version may still haunt you. ;p

yoo.... i TRIED not to think about 85mm f1.4, very poison leh...

By the way, thanks for your compliment :)

If you get the hang of shooting with 85mm lens, half body or full body, you will find that it gives you rather nicely proportioned portriats compared to the 50mm.

Although 85mm f/1.4 is one hell of a lens, the 85mm f/1.8 is no push over. For the price, it's one lens you will not regret getting especially if you shoot portraits. I believe it is also a easy lens to re-sell if you intend to go for the f/1.4 lens later.

Although there is much talk about bokeh, bokeh is not all to a good portrait shot. Composition and perspective plays more important part, IMHO, in a good portrait.

well...

i have the 85mm to let u try out.. hahaha... people like watsupgungho should know.. haha.

that lens is sharp. bokeh... ok la. depends on what effects u wanna achieve.

so far. head shots / half bodied shots with my 85mm still give good sharp images.

No doubts about that, the 85/1.8 is also a good lens. But as human nature dictates, if there's something better, you will not feel satisfied. At least for an AF 50/1.4, that's the best you can go for the focal length unless you don't mind the MF version where a 50/1.2 is available. ;p

the 9 bladed nikkor 50mm f1.2 :bsmilie:

how about the built quality of these 2 lenses?

both are metal? or something like 50mm f1.8 built.

As far as I recall, both barrels are plastic. I have the 85mm f/1.8... it's quite solidly built.

I'll vote for the 50mm f1.4.

You'll be able to "zoom" in with your legs if you wan half body/ head shot but you will not be able to do the reverse (to "zoom" out) on a 85mm if you are space constrained.

I agree with Isisaxon on the communication part. Imagine standing far away to take a full body shot and shouting across to convey your message.

Get the 85mm f1.8 for half-body and head shots, you will not regret with it's result.
For full body shots, either you use your "leg zoom" or get the cheapo budget 50mm f1.8.

Or you shouldn't be bothered about the 50mm and the full-body shots since it's not your main interest.

just my 2 cents.
