2 tripod concept?

Hi all,

I am seriously looking for a good tripod. From my search in this forum regarding the choice of tripod, there are camps recommending a more "future proof" tripod which essentially means bulkier and heavier, and camps recommending a light and adequate one for travelling and ease of carriage.

I am wondering if any of you guys employ the 2-tripod concepts, one for more sturdy work and one for travelling/hiking? Of course this is based on limited fund$ assumption.

It's tough choosing the right tripod, you bet.

i am one of those that purchase a light tripod for travelling and a sturdy tripod for heavy setup....

this has served me well and i strongly recommend doing so.... but make sure your light setup is able to withstand the weight of your setup: camera, lens, flash etc...
dun buy a light weight that is easy to carry around and then have your whole setup topple over... that is going to cost you a lot of $$$$.....

I have 3 tripods at home.. tall, medium, short. the short one is one of those cheapos from carrefour. good for travelling.

Hmmm... compact CF tripod (eg. the Gitzo mountaineering series tripod) might be very light and can handle a pretty good load, but if you are talking about really stable and having big lenses, I think you still need a nice and heavy aluminum or CF tripod.

Money is a problem so 2 tripods for me. One Manfrotto 190 for home still life shoots and trips where i need a heavy set up like the zoo. And one very light (and flimsy) Slik tripod to hold my prosumer bridge camera. I used that setup for the Singapore Garden Fest. Very mobile and unobtrusive. But i am looking to replace the Slik with something more substantial but less cumbersome than the Manfrotto.

actually considering your manfrotto 190pro + normally a 486RC2, the price is already 300 and another tripod of let say $100 it is close to 400. adding maybe 100-200+ you can get a pretty go benro CF tripod. it might not be as stable as the heavy manfrotto, but more than enough unless you are using super size lens.

iirc some of the benro CF tripod are weighted about 1.5kg and price is <$350. coupled with their ballhead <$200 you are ready to go. I know the setup ain't exactly light weight, but it is pretty solid.

IMO, I think that would be a little too much weight for the Slik. :think:

You can risk it, but I definitely wouldn't.

I also uses 2 tripods. One for Birding uses, (heavy setup) and another compact for casual/travel. Both weight about the same but only the size is diff. cos the big tripod is a Benro CF, m227n6 whilt the compact one is a Gitzo (4 section and forgot the model liao). The gitzo attached to the side of my computrecker plus nicely.

imho the default ballhead ain't meant to take heavy load like the setup you mention. the ballhead will wear out very easily. but if you happen to change to a better ballhead, it should be able to support, tho not very stable.

Where can I find Benro CF tripod in Singapore shops? I only see Benro Alu tripod in Jack006 thread. BTW are the Benro Alu tripod good enough?
