Do you use a ultralight laptop when going overseas?

i'm talking about very light (<12.9", <1.5kg w battery) laptops or tablet pcs, or any larger devices with a decent viewer at least 7-8" and a keyboard.

Do you do that?
What brand and model is your laptop that you bring?
Do you bring your battery or just rely on constant power through cable without battery?
How did you find your equipment?
If you were to give advice, what would you say the next party should buy?

u mean those ultraportables...

y bring those when u can just bring a device like P2000? Unless u prefer editing on the go, or u have business or something.

I usually bring my 12" iBook G4 overseas.

Whilst it is light enough to be ported around occasionally can't help but it gets heavier and heavier and heavier as the day passes so I just leave it in the hotel room most of the time to charge and process my photos at the end of the day.

Of cos, would just use it to surf net if there's internet availability. Can't live without it. ;p

i'm using a compaq presario B1800 series which weigh 1.6kg with battery and 1.4kg without battery. yet with the same heavy power cable/adaptor, a laptop (as a functional set with accessories) can never be light. i bring my laptop with power cable/adaptor but without battery for my travel. but there is no lighter replacement for the power cable/adaptor and that is really sad.

now looking back a year of progression, i dun see significant weight/size improvements, the best might be panasonic toughbook at 1.4kg without battery, and maybe smaller screen fujitsu. but everything that is small and decent is costing about 3K plus. well think that i probably have to be stuck with my current system at this weight, cos it is not worthwhile upgrading at the moment.

i'm hoping for a decent laptop with a good screen and decent ability for photo enhancement, no need for cd/dvd roms, 10-12", less than 1kg with battery, but cost less than 2k. well, i think, i can only dream on for at least 2 more years.

i find those portable devices not large enough and worthwhile.

DSLR's LCD is already 2-3", so unless this portable is 6", significantly lighter and cheap enough (which will not be the case), there is no point and no choice for me.

The sony TZ series has a model at $2799. below 3k. I think the samsung or LG has ultraportables below 3k. Below 2k impossible lah.

You want at least 6" screen? My sony u8g is 5" screen and I am selling for like $1250. The AC adaptor for this is VERY light and small (sony's stuff). If you don't bring battery, it weighs super light I think. like all my stuff, they are very lightly used

But the machine is super slow due to the 256meg RAM.... Still for portability, nothing beats it. but I am ditching it for a P3000.

The u8g is super slow to boot up, etc. The P3000 is very fast. I can turn it on within 3 seconds, connect the USB cable, and I can browse the pictures in CAMERA without copying anything. The review is fast, navigation VERY simple, the screen is MUCH MUCH better than the 2.5" LCD DSLR screens. zooming in is fast, got histogram, exif data, slideshow with MP3 music backing up the card is also just a press of a button.

Depends on your usage but I find a slow laptop a chore to use on my travels.
Especially when it is not designed specifically for photo use, ie you have to lauch the photoviewer, navigate windows explorer, etc. P3000's navigation is very simple.

actually no money now, just interested in know if there are good lobangs on the way. thanks for the offer.

in a way i do digital enhancement on the way, so a 5" is really too small, perhaps fair enough for viewing, but to zoom in all the time can be a pain. i think a 9-11" is just right, becos i'm using a 12.1" and think i can still go lower although some ppl cannot work with that. it is good to know from you that epson p3000 starts up fast and have a good screen, for those interested in a viewer (laptop is an overkill for that job).

The closest travel laptop I almost bought is the Dell Latitude X1 @ 1.1kg.
But anyway, I don't use a laptop when going overseas

how do you store it safely in your hotel room? is it small enough to put in the safe or do you just leave it in your locked suitcase?

Unless can surf internet when go oversea otherwise might as well go there look for internet places that paid and use.
