Canon supporters will say 30D, Nikon supporters will say D80.. Since the price is near, I will suggest to go to any shops to try out both cameras. The one u like most is the one most worthwhile.. Quality-wise I believe they are on par, both has their respective strengths and weaknesses..

Well, actually it all depends.

Of course, I will tell you that the Canon is a better camera. But that is my biased opinion.

It all depends on whether you a have an exsisting system in the first place. If you have a Nikon system with a bunch of lenses and accessories, then I would suggest going with the Nikon as it won't burn a big hole in your pocket. And the same goes for the Canon.

But however you are starting to build your system from scratch then I would suggest the Canon. Whatever I have said is just my opinion, ultimately you have to make a decision, do your research.

I think someone posted a list of camera reviews.i.e. dpreview.com and steve's-digicams.com

Those would be good places to start.

Both are great cameras. And I won't go into details comparing specs as you probably already know them.

If you intend not to use RAW / pp much then you need to try shooting using each camera / browse around pics taken by each and decide which camera gives the 'colour' or 'look' that you like. Also which feels best on your hand.

Although both are about the same price, you need to give some considerations on the price of the lenses as eventually you are buying the overall system not just 1 body.

just my 2 cents.

Also the crop factor, i think Canon is 1.6X and Nikon is 1.5x.

Look for the whole system, not just a camera only. Lenses, flashes, accessories, etc.

Some say look what your close friend have, so you can borrow your friend's lens(es) ;p .

i like canon for the ISO
i'll go for the 30D
personal opinion

Both Is Around The Same Price....

Which Is More Value For Money....

In Terms Of Quality.....

Cheers..

My $0.02.

- 30D has slightly better image quality than the D80 --> 30D uses a CMOS sensor and the D80 uses a CCD. 30D has lower noise at high ISOs than the 80D

- D80 has a more ergonomic feel. Fits much better into the hand and feels more solid - this is a personal opinion, YMMV. You might want to consider this seriuosly if you shoot a lot.

- What lenses are you looking for? What do you intend to use this camera for? IMHO, canon has a better set of lenses in the EOS eco system.

- At this price point, I'd say 30D is definitely a better buy. To compare apples with apples, you should compare the 30D with the 200D, which is slightly more expensive.

- It might not be of consequence to many, but the Canon is made in Japan and the Nikon is made in Thailand. "Made in Japan" is perceived to be better quality.

Cheers!

I have Canon 30D and D70s. After using the both systems, my opinion is this

Go for 30D if
1. U prefer non-flash photography cause the noise control is good
2. Always shooting in low light photography

Go for D80 if
1. U like sharp, crisp and vibrant images. U dun have to shoot in raw to get that type of image.
2. If u always shoot outdoors

Do note the following though
1. Canon L lenses (referring to Canon F4L's) is cheaper than Nikon's premium lens (F2.8). People may argue that they are different in aperture but Nikon does not have a aperture constant zoom lens to compare unless it is F2.8. Canon F4L's is quality type of lens.

2. Canon 30D less ergonomical grip can be solved by the battery grip. I also cannot stand the Canon 30D without the extra grip.

3. I prefer Nikon's external flash system to Canon's.

Hope it helps but at the end of the day, it is still u that makes the decision.

True. you cant compare 30D with D80, one plastic body the other magnesium alloy, plus awhole list of differences...

go for pentax K10D. Much better value for money. $1320 + 101 features D80/30D dun have.

Hehehe..., but Pentax doesn't have Nikon and Canon have ==> Crowd :bsmilie: .

Go with the crowd, you can't go wrong...

Great Tips Guys.... Well My Heart Is With Canon Actually... My Previous System Is Canon... Just Cant Resist Freebies At The Same Price On The D80 ;p ... *free 2GB SD, Tripod, Bag, 40GB Harddrive... Canon Offer 1GB CF.....

But Hey... I Still Think Canon Is A Wiser Choice Despite The Freebies....;p

But Then Again There's A Part Of Me Urging To Give Nikon A Try....

Haha... I Just Don't Know What To Do...

BTW... Is The Kit lens On The 30D A IS USM Lens?

Here's my 0.02 cents. I'm a Nikon shooter. But if I was starting out fresh, I'd go for Canon especially the 30D.

BTW... Is The Kit lens On The 30D A IS USM Lens?
to your question, its not IS nor USM..

both cameras are equally capable cameras. let me list what i like about the 30D (opinion of a 30D user) and D80 (from the perspective of a neutral user)

30D:
1. v.good control in high ISOs, the D80 is not too far back though.
2. seems more distributed in weight when coupled with grip and heavy lens
3. support from canon singapore seems to be v.good, with the service centre having v.friendly staff as well as competitive prices for lens from local shops.
4. is the number of FPS impt to you (eg shooting sports) ? if yes, its 5fps vs 3fps

D80:
1. like the handling of the D80 with the grip...
2. overall slightly lighter than 30D + grip + 70-200mm f2.8L lens (compared with D80 + grip + 70-200mm f2.8), that means you can hand hold your camera for longer periods of time
3. have dedicated buttons for several functions, some users might find it easier to use than canon's but it might be more complicated for people in some cases (applies to me)
4. nikon has a strong buy and sell community here at clubsnap, there are much more items up for sale 2nd hand over here compared to canon (or at least thats what i think)

Both:
1. have huge amount of users in singapore, you cant go too far wrong with either brand.

btw. i had only handled the D80 for about 20mins at a shop a couple of weeks ago. my personal opinions are purely based on the short hands on experience and not limited to what the camera is / might be capable of. D80 is actually a serious contender for some quality phototaking abeit its functions and features is slightly worse than 30D.. if you want to stretch your budget a little, D200 would be a more fair competitor for 30D though.

finally, you mentioned that you are a canon user, a film slr user i presume? you might save quite abit of some money when you use back your old canon lens (assuming they are EF mount)...
just my $0.02..

I'm a canon user..

I say dunk both ideas and get D200

Both are good cameras.

What lens comes with it or are you looking at body only :dunno:

The Nikon comes with a better lens.

I have Nikon, Canon and Olympus and I like them all; but I do prefer the Canon (20D).

Out of interest, do you watch much TV ????

I have noticed that military types tend to use Nikon (NCIS etc) whilst Sporting types use Canon (Football matches etc.) .

By the way, have you access to either brand of lens ? that can sway the gudgement.

Forget the megapixel difference and forget the noise difference (unless you intend upping the ISO).

If you intend shooting IR then the Nikon would be the choice, otherwise, which one feels best in your hands ?

The one that feels best is the one that will not have you thinking later," I should have bought the other one".

Cheers :)

imho price is not near... d80 kit (with the 18-135) cost slightly higher than 30d body only... that lens is worth 400-500bucks, so definitely not near.
