there is a thermostat on the pcb, it will regulate the fan in accordance to the temp generated.

Depend. Some laptops have thermostat built-in , the fan will spin when it is hot.

Thanks everyone for the replies. My touchpad is very hot after a while, I guess the laptop has to go back to the service centre again. Guess that they didn't do a good checkup.. :(

????? ???? Maybe you like to try the touchpad yourself? I dun think u can last 10 sec either..:bsmilie: :bsmilie:

Depending on model and design, but MOST laptop fans turn on only when the laptop heats up and the sensor tells the fan to turn on to cool down the internals. Or sometimes it starts whirling when you are running a processor intensive application to cool down the overworked processor. It should not be running all the time but some designs are such that the sensors get triggered easily and you have a noisy laptop.

Hope this helps.

Depending on what is your definition of hot. The earlier model of MacBook Pro is bloody hot. But it is still considered "normal operating heat" according to Apple... go figure... :dunno:

Just curious what is the brand of the laptop ?

Just check your laptop user manual, see whether it's normal or not.

I set my notebook fan to always on.

I did a DIY laptop cooler 3 years back. 4x 80mm Delta fans. The laptop was cool no doubt but the noise drove one nuts :bsmilie:
