Chatuchak Market in BKK Closing down?

Heard from News last month half of the Chatuchak Market kena whack by local gangster. suspect never paid protection money.
News is that the govt or developer want to redevelop the land where the market is sitting on now. Those who got roughed up were those who refused to move.
a fren came back fm BKK 2wks back, said the mkt is 50% gone. most probably by now nothing left liao. sad...
it was in the news.
actually the lease holder was undercontract to develop the place properly.
he wanted to.
but the stall holders refused to move.
some legal complication.
both sides say they got legal petition.
so some one must have got the mob to muscle in and destroy the place.
but a much better chatuchak may rise from this.

I was there on the 11th and 12th Nov and happily shopping....

Really??? That's sad indeed! I love that place! Bought many nice and cheap things from there. The Thais are really creative!
There are a couple of stalls with amazing interior decor stuff! Gosh, I hope it's for the better. One thing for sure, upon redevelopment, we can expect the prices to go up (again). A few stallholders were lamenting to me how their rental kept increasing.

Maybe they will build a "Chatuchak The Shopping Mall"? with aircon and clean toilets and all those comfort stuffs.
Then things won't be cheap anyone. The place, except for the variety of goods, will just be the same as MBK or Siam Square.
