Travel lens?

Hi all,

I m thinking of getting a EF 28-135mm f/3.5-5.6 IS USM for my 400D. Shld be able to minimise changing of lens since wider range than my kit 18-55. Gg to cambodian rural areas this dec. Any comments on this lens or any better suggestions?

don't know about your preference but I find 17mm or 18mm is quite essential for capturing those landscape....

if dun want to spend too much...get 28-125 + use your kit lenses for wide angle.....although not very wide also.

the 28-135 isn't exactly the sharpest lens around. i suggest the sigma 18-125mm f/3.5-5.6. it is sharp, light and costs about $200 less than the 28-135 (2nd hand)

for the price u pay for a 28-135 ($500+ 2nd hand), i'd rather get a 17-70mm sigma or a 17-50mm f/2.8 tamron.

the higher price of the canon one, i think shld be becos of the IS bah. not too sure abt the sigma one, new to lens. haha.... hmmm....sounds like a reasonable offer.

i've survived without IS till now it's nice to have, but not absolutely essential unless you're using telephoto lenses (some may beg to differ of course).

with the sigmas and tamrons, you get the benefit of wide angle. the sigma 18-125 gives you approx 29mm wide angle on a 1.6x camera. the tamron 17-50 gives you about 28mm thereabouts. the canon 28-135 gives you 44mm. if i wanted an all in one travel lens, i would like wide angle for sure.

$672 as listed from the price list page. i find it quite steep for a newbie like me and i still got a few other stuffs to buy for my trip. dunno how worth isit

yea, IS i guess its a luxury bah. wide angle is definitely something gd to have in a travel lens. hmmmm, i really have little knowledge abt lens and especially 3rd party lens....

i strongly recommend a wide-angle lens for travelling, esp. to rural areas where there are lots of horizons to be captured. at least 17mm, esp. for your 1.6x crop cam.

18-200 is a real gd range and sigma prices are much more affordable for newbie who has a tight budget like me. any critiques abt this lens? positive or negative? is it light and portable?

hi, very nice, sharp and expressive photos you got there. so how often do u have to zoom, really? actually, i m not a tourist to cambodia, more of a community worker on volunteer basis. so most of the time i will be based in villages doing community work. so i would estimate, 60% portrait, head and shoulder shots and the landscape shots should come during my R n R.

using the 28-135is with my 300d (yep old but no need to change if it aint broken) for my travels and find it good enough for my standards, most of the time the limit is me and not the lens or the camera. I find the IS useful especially when travelling and to reduce a bit of shake especially when the light not to good and no need to use tripod or monopod (i know the IS does not replace the tripod or monopod but it helps for a learner like me). I also like the build of the lens so i would be one who would recommend it.

i think that u should get a low aperture lens. it helps a lot in lower light. i can shoot the whole of the orchard lights using f2.8 and without a tripod.

Since it is not a tour trip, I believe you have plenty of time to take candid and portrait shots of the community workers. I would recommend a prime lens like 50mm, 85mm, 100mm or 135mm for low lighting portrait shots and together with ur 28-135mm for general shots.
