Hi folks,

I m a new DSLR user and will be heading to cambodia for a community work project this dec. What do u think i will need to bring along to last the 24 days?

Kit lens of 400D q sucky, will invest on a new lens, need advice on this.
My two 1GB CF card is already full juz after 3 shoots with my proj team. Portable HD?
How many spare batts? 24 days without electricity...
I have got a tripod ready.
What else shld i be equipped with?

Ohya, is there overseas insurance for camera??

Thanks!

i believe ure shooting more on landscape and people working. 18-55 is good enough. i believe you want to look pro so you wish to get a better lens. 75-300 is also good if you need distance.

if 2gb is not enough den shoot with small/medium fine or shoot lesser. 10MP is alot. delete unncessary pictures. portable hdd will also be a good idea if u are tigger happy person.

24 days without electricity and ure tigger happy, den be prepare to bring A WHOLE LOAD of batteries.

u have flash?

BUT unless you have to do the community work too, no point lugging your dSLR along. digital camera is good enough.

yes, 10MP is exhaustive for my cards. i m be heading to 2 villages, in betw will probably passed by major city, hopfully can recharged. If not i m looking like 5 spare batt minimum. I did think of getting a batt grip and buy AA over there, but dunno if efficient anot.

i have to do the community work loh, even though i m the team photographer. Will have to rotate roles with the rest of my team.

If i were you, i'd just bring a good p&s camera, should be good enough. But if you don't have or must bring your 400D, then stick to the kit lens. A bit gritty and grain doesn't reall matter for the subject u will be taking. And u don't have to shoot at 10mp unless u want to print out bigger than A3 size.

the batt grip is a good idea. 5 spare batts wont be enough. Get the grip and the AA batt adapter and buy a whole load of energisers or sanyo eneloop rechargeables.

lens - tamron 17-50mm

storage - bring portable hdd

If you don't want to bring too many lenses and don't need best image quality, buy 18-200 lenses from tamron or sigma.

Else, buy Canon 10-22, 17-55 and 70-200 lenses.

yea, i prob bring juz one more lens, a versatile one. bo lui liao, muz budget abit. hows the sigma lens? prices ok? quality ok?

Both Sigma and tamron have 18-200 lens available now, tamron more ex but heard is more sharp.

Sigma coming out 18-200 with Optical Stabilizer *drool*.

Tamron coming out with 18-250 no stabilizer.

These are all purpose lens so don't expect too much in quality. But you will love them cos no need to change lens throughout your entire trip.

Maybe u want to tell us wat u'll be mostly shooting at? People? ur team mates? or are u going sight seeing after ur community work? I went Phnom Penh, Prey veng (one of the vilalge) and Siem Reap for 10 days.. erm.. actually i only took very few pictures in the village.. took most of my pics at siem reap as the temples/wats are really amazing.. if u like to shoot head and shoulders portrait, u can get Canon EF 50mm f1.8.. good n cheap lens.. produce nice pics.. mainly portrait.. but if u r doing more of group pics, kit lens ok..

mostly my team mates in action, the kids and the villagers. for R n R, shld be scenaries and country side life

5 batt is more than enough imo. Unless you sleeping and camping outdoor else you will have lots of chance to charge your batteries.

Considering one batt can easily takes more than 300 photos(you take more than 300 shots a day?)...you sure will have no problems with batteries, most likely is your memory cards not enough.

Even if you bring one portable storage, make sure you take care of it well.

yes, i will be staying in the outdoors, together with the villagers. hahaha, initially wanted to bring along a generator, but not quite feasible la. only time i can charge will be when i go into the city, when i moved to the nxt village. maybe might get two 2GB cards, still considering.

Just got back from Siem Reap. There are many many photo opportunities. Whatever number of batteries or memory cards you planned for, make sure you have enough.

Power outlet are the round 2 pins type. Your canon charger will fit easily.

It is dry this time of the year and it is very dusty everywhere. If you are there doing community work, I reckon you will be at the outskirts and it'll be worst. To prevent dust from getting onto your sensor, do bring along an "all in one lens" like the 18-125mm or the 18-200mm. The long reach will give you good bokeh from the many potrait shots to capture their beautiful smile. Don't miss the sunrises (around 6am) and sunsets (around 5.30pm).

When I was there, I can see many of them pumping water from the well. Get you jabs early. Lots of mosquitos around. If you are taking your anti malaria pills, you need to take the 1st at least 2 weeks before your trip. For more info:-

i will be heading to 2 ulu villages, one will be nxt to mekong river, the other is somewhere closer to land. yes, a multi-purpose lens with a wide range will help to minimise exposure to dust. i forsee i will need the range to capture those impromptu shots.

i will be gg for typhoid jab and malaria pills are already issued out by my first aider.

thanks!

get a 18-200 lens and stick to it. i believe most shots will be done with lots of light. so the aperture will not be an issue.

it will be great if you can get a battery grip. AA batteries really comes in handy.

a portable hdd is absolutely neccessary unless you intend to shoot in small jpgs.

bring along cleaning equipment, like blower, lens solution and stuff. harsh environments.

Seriously, just get a EF-s 17-55mm, or equivalent 3rd party, more than enough.

And another small P&S cam for documentary purposes.
