Prime vs Zoom

Hi guys,
(dno if this is a retarded qns, but anyways...)

I'm gonna get a 50mm F1.8 II to do lowlight indoor shoots.
I'm currently having a 28-105mm F3.5-4.5 USM.
Let's say I wanna shoot a scene and ignore focal length limitation, which lens will produce a better quality picture?
They say prime lens have higher quality over zoom ones, so use prime to shoot? :dunno:

Primes have their own advantage over Zooms, and of course Zooms provide flexiblity.

take what you need.

Primes do perform optically better because theres less elements in the the construction of lens.

focus faster because less elements is moving.

I'm not familiar with Canon lenses, but, looking at the 2 lenses u have, the 50mm should perform better than the 28-105 at 50mm.

Generally, primes perform better optically, but there are high quality zooms nowadays that come close Why not perform a test with the 2 lenses u have and see for yourself?

Prime will always outshine zoom lens because it has bigger aperture (hence allow faster shutter speed) and better colour contrast, however, if u thinking of shooting indoor low lights, whether prime or zoom, u would still need to use flash or tripod, the other alternative is shoot in high ISO but that would degrade the quality in some ways.

The el-cheapo 50/1.8 prime actually beats all consumer zooms and possibly all L zooms where image quality is concerned, at 50mm and equivalent aperture setting.

Go for the prime.... get a faster one if you can afford it..

Indoors? with or without artificial lighting? flourescents or tungsten? Off camera flash or slaves?

it all depends right? if you have the gear, it doesn't make much of a difference whether its a zoom or not.

if you're looking at arty farty stuff then maybe you're thinking about bokeh... if thats what you need, then the wide aperture of the 50mm will do this beautifully...

Both lenses have their advantages and uses. But for outright image quality, it'll be the prime 50mm.

Okay that clears up the fog.

Thanks guys for all the help. So I can say that @ 50mm, the prime is good coz it's specifically built for that focal length and has big aperture.
And to refer to the colour contrast,
(just bought my 50mm F1.8)
It's really cool! VERY VERY NICE =D LIKE IT VERY MUCH HAHAHA!!!
Today gonna go down to the DOCK and take pictures of the ship!
