got a ques bugging me.

assuming i have the 105 DC lens or the 85 f1.4.and i go shooting portraiture outdoors.

do you guys use it at f2 and f1.4 respectively?
will the DOF be so shallow that the eyes will be sharp and the ears be blur?
if so, what's the point of these big lobang lenses when you dont shoot at max lobang?

so if you use the 85 f1.4 at f4 or f5.6, will it defeat the purpose of getting this lens?

pls advise.

i'm crazy about nikkor lenses now and i'm thinking of buying both.pls discourage me.:embrass: :nono:

It all depends on the effect you want to acheive.
Maybe for some shots some people want to have eyes sharp and the ears be blur.

to discourage you... please give me your camera gears and find another hobby ;p

DoF is depend on distance. When you shoot a person with f/1.4 at 1.5m, you might get eye sharp and ears blurs. But DoF is wider when you shoot a person at say 4m.

Remember, in most case, when you shoot portrait of person, eyes must be sharp (not the ears must be sharp). Eyes is more important than ears.

Arto.

most lens design to perform best at close down two stop..
and the quality of a f1.4 lens and a f1.8 lens won't be the same.

An example by fengwei on using f/1.2 lens
A portrait by a 50mm F1.2 lens ...

although only the eye is sharp, but it look good to me, some use the big aperture to achieve a nice bokeh and isolated the subject out nicely (though ignoring the ear and etc parts).

Reading your thread title... I thought your lens got a BIG HOLE! :bsmilie: :bsmilie: :bsmilie:

actually I am also looking for an outdoor portraiture lens for my travels. Just sold my tamron 28-75mm f2.8.

I think I will probably get either the 105mm f2.8 VR or the sigma 50-150 f2.8 as they are both below 1kg in weight.

Dunno if I should get the 85m f1.4 instead... my thinkings is that it will be too hard for me to focus using f1.4 or f2 and I will end up with too many OOF shots. I am interested in people who have used the 85mm f1.4 often. How often do they use f2 or f1.4? and is it easy to get a good focus using those aperture.

Is there a big difference between the 85mm and 105mm VR at f2.8? I heard the 105mm VR is very good wide open too with quite a pleasing bokeh.

the 105 vr is a macro lens right?it is not a portrait lens.

i've been so frustrated by clueless sales people that whenever i ask for 105DC lens f2, they told me DISCONTINUED and the latest one is 105 VR 2.8.Duh:rolleyes:

i am EXTREMELY convinced that the 105 macro lens produces a different effect as compared to the 105DC lens.105DC is the ultimate portrait lens from nikon.period.
(don bother to correct me on this cos i'm going to buy it by hook or by crook.:bsmilie:)

I have used the DC & 85mm F1.4/1.8 for my work & my clients are pretty pleased with them..Whether the eyes are sharped and the ears are blurred all depends on the photographer. Photography is not about JUST getting this areas sharped and that areas to be blurred...!

Besides, DoF which you have mentioned is important in lens purchases, however these lens do have their specific uses in the field of photography. This is a point that needs to be addressed.

The Nikon 85mm (is 1 but not the only) is a superb lens for people photography & not just portraits!.. I would go for the PC lens for architecture.. ..Never appreciated the DCs in my preference..

Remember, with the 1.5x factor in digital camera, you actually have a "longer lens". .Yup, let your legs do the "zooming".. I shot 85mm 1.4 & 1.8..I do not usually shoot at f1.4/f1.8 all the times..!;)

Its just a lens that is capable of very wide aperture..

My 2 cents worth..

I have a 50mm f1.8, and it's great for low light shooting without flash. Not related to your DoF question but it's one good reason to get a BIG LOBANG lens.

i've not tried 1.8 but i have the 1.4.

i love it in low light too but it's not really that good for portraiture.

i didnt quite believe the price diff bet the 1.8 and 1.4 is almost 2x initially.!

get over the shoot at max aperture phase

then buy f2.8 for what?buy f2 or f1.4 for what?

that's what my question is!

if i get the 70-200 vr and shoot at 5.6,

will it be the same as getting the 70-300 and shoot at 5.6?:dunno:

shutter speed might the same.. but quality of image, i doubt it will be the same. :p
