S'pore teen faces 3 years' jail for tapping into another's wireless Internet

most of the time my friends let their computer search for the wireless network by itself, thinking that it'll connect onto their home network. but windows or mac in some cases will just happily hook on to the first network they can find and stay there. so is this a crime?

ya... its a crime...

every sgrean should seriously consider keeping aside about 50k in CASH in case anything suay happen u get called up to the police station for such charges, and u can hire a lawyer, get bailed out, and then pay a fine that you don't even know existed...

(tonight i'll go set my router to no password, and hope some innocent ppl use mine, and i'll lodge a police report against them...)

My house here got at least 4-6 networks, out of which 2 is unsercured. My brother's comp is very far from the router and sometimes gets hooked onto the unsercured network. I got no prob though, I connect directly by cable.

I am all for a peaceful law abiding society, but we must take a look and make sure the punishment is justifiable.

agreed. but in this case i think it's ok lah, the thing about reports like this is that they give the maximum penalties based on what is said in the statutes. but the computer misuse act is very broad, so the maximums apply to serious computer crimes. so what the report doesn't say is that this fella is likely to get off with a much lighter punishment if convicted. even if the judge does something funny, can still appeal.

as we can see with the penal code review, advances in technology have outpaced refinements in our legal system. i think they're still trying to work out how to handle newer crimes. guess this guy was just suay enough to kena... another case of kill one person to warn a hundred.
