Thought this qn would be better phrased as:
tamron 70-300mm vs EF 75-300mm III USM vs nikkor AF-S 55-200mm vs FZ30
In terms of focusing speed and accuracy.

I have not used screwdriver AF, so i'm wondering if its focus would match the FZ30 which i used to have.

55-200mm has shorter reach, but is the SWM significantly faster? Should i even consider it given its higher price vs the tamron?

I've included the EF 75-300mm just for curiosity sake (i use d70 so impossible to change system), to find out whether the USM is really good.

Would any of the above lens be fast enough to catch pics like pets dogs on the run?

from my basic understanding, 70-300 sigma focus slower than fz30 especially at the longer end of the zoom. 55-200 is pretty fast, and i think the speed is more or less the same as fz30 and maybe slightly faster on the longer end. 75-300 i dono since i don own a canon.

as for capturing running dogs, it depends on which direction it is running to and how skillful you are.

hmm... thx for your quick reply.

Btw, i was just using the case of running dogs as a guide.

I would like to know if any complains about screwdriver AF? Kenrockwell said the nikkor 70-300mm G is slow at AF, so i got rather worried on how slow is slow. I'm not catching a bumble bee in flight, but i would want to take pics of F1 boat races or airshows. Would it suffice (given bright sunlight of course)?

should be more than enough if the f1 ain't running towards you face to face.

after reading about the upcoming d40, i guess i might want to wait and see if nikon will release an AF-S 70-300mm. They shouldn't be forcing d40 users to go for the VR right :bsmilie:

why not try the 70-200 G....should be fast enough for your usage...

I dunno... i doubt that FZ30 prosumer cam is faster than the dslr lens you mentioned here... also have to depends on what camera body that you are using.

I have compare before FZ20 with sigma 70-300 on D70s. FZ20 is slower.

dono :dunno:. i find the sigma 70-300 is pretty fast in good lighting but real slow at indoor lighting and at >250mm it is bloody slow. even my fz5 can beat it easily at 12x zoom (high spd one area focus)
