Hi all, need your guys comments on this.

Have read up some materials in the web regarding these 2 filters

"These close-up lenses obviously signify a working distance of up to 250 mm and are recommended for use with lenses in the 50mm to 135mm range (maximum filter diameter available is 58mm). The 500 lenses are recommended for lenses in the 70mm to 300mm range."

I wish to get a similar one for the 135mm f2L lens. Should I then get the 250D or 500D? Any diff besides the magnification? Or any comments on this setup?

Thanks in advance!

Also, any idea where can get in Spore?

Close-up lenses are rated in diopters, for example a close-up lens like the Canon 500D is rated as 2 diopters

To compute the maximum focus distance of a close-up lens divide 1000MM by the diopter rating

Example 1000mm/2 diopters = 500 mm(max focus distance)

In the Canon close-up lens the numeric nomenclature denote the max focusing distance, for the 500D , the 500 refers to the maximum possible focusing distance in millimeters from the front of the close-up lens to subject when the prime lens is set at infinity, D refers to double element construction ..... achromatic lens.

For maximum magnification , set the manual focusing ring of your prime lens to the closest distance and adjust the camera position back and forth until subject is sharp in the view finder.

For best picture qualiity with the close-up lens stop down your prime lens to F/5.6-8.

Most (all) of the reputable cameras shops do.

Thanks for the comments.

Does both filter have options for 72mm thread? Why the need for recommendation of different focal lengths for the 2 filters?

250D = +4 diopter and will give 1000/4 = 25cm working distance
500D = +2 diopter and will give 1000/2 = 50cm working distance

Check useful info below

You have mentioned it yourself, the maximum diameter for 250D is 58mm. So only 500D can fit your 135mm f2L.

Oh ya ;p

Anyway anyone actually already using this setup?

$190 for the 72mm 500D worth it?

I'm thinking it's not very useful for a prime lens. The 500d will only allow u to take pic from a specific range of distance( ie 50-60cm), and that would mean u can only get a certain fixed amount of magnification.

Yup understand but there is no 500d for 67mm thread rite for the 70-200mm f4? :(

And when you mean fixed amt of mag, can i clarify that do i get the same mag factor using the 70-200mm at 135mm compared to using the 135mm prime?

Also, closest focusing distance of 135mm is 0.9m while the 70-200mm f2.8 is 1.4m. Wouldn't the 135mm with the shorter focusing distance allow you to work closer with the subject then?

This I'm not very sure. But I shd think that irregardless of min. focussing dist of the lens, u'll still need to be at ard 50cm. 500D is meant more for zoom lens of 70-300mm which u can stay at 1 spot and achieve diff mag.

FYI, I've used 500d on my 18-55mm b4, and it actually does magnify the object by quite a bit. Focussing Dist ard 25cm or so.

When using closeup lens or filter, the focusing distance is fixed to the diopter factor. Yes 135m prime and 135mm of 70-200mm with same diopter factor has the same focusing distance, even apply to other focal length like 100mm , 200mm , 300mm , 400mm , 500mm, 600mm or more.

Thanks megaweb, but since the 135 prime has a smaller focusing distance than the 70-20mm in the first place WITHOUT the close up filter, shouldn't it be consistant and still have a smaller distance than the 70-200 WITH the close up filter on?

Any comments on the above? you reckon 500D is worth the 190?

When using closeup filter, focusing distance is depend on diopter factor and not focal length.

ok. Any formula to calculate this? Relationship focusing distance and diopter factor?

Thanks for the link!

Oh another thought came to my mind... what about extension tubes? There are no glass elements so how is their performance?
