After centuries of conquests by great empires, surviving long harsh winters, leading nomadic lifes and weaving legendary love stories between the more than 100 ethnic tribes, there exist a special place in the vast steppes of Central Asia, stretching from the Caspian Sea to the Atlay Mountains, where the bloodlines of the East truly meet the West.

A modern Kazakh daughter, whom Ghenghis Khan will be proud of, was born in the former capital city Almaty, near Tianshan. In keeping traditions of her bloodline, she leads a nomadic, but glamorous life as a model, traveling round the world.

Thanks to ModelInn, a few lucky guys in Singapore were given the opportunity to capture the raw energy of this beauty from the steppes of Kazakhstan, in our urban setting.

Presenting my version of Irina:

Not a bad series...my preference goes to the last pic. If you can have more space for the full body shot, it'll be perfect.

I noticed for some of your shots, it's OOF on the head/eye. Please take note of that. It could be you're doing focus shift.

Nice series James.. somehow it looks a little soft here, I think u need to apply unsharp mask to the pics.. if u shoot Digital, this is a must actually..

Don't think so bro. Looks like it's OOF due to focus shift. I encountered this a lot during shoots. Now I try to avoid shifting too much.

bro no4 i like :) wah steady u managed to capture the hair in the wind

Nicely done James. Great to have met you and the other guys.

Especially liked your last pic and the bg.

Did not managed to get many good pics. Quite a no oof. Mostly taken with my 24-70mm. Those taken with the 85mm were good. Will take your advise to use more prime lens. Let the legs do the zooming.

Hope to meet you in other shoots. :)

EK, you are fallling into the trap and illusion of blaming your equipment.

haha, student. A poor workman blames his tools, right?

ok lah, will work harder and think of what went wrong with the oof pics

Will be going to MAH tomorrow. Hopefully see you at breakfast.

Thanks for the appreciation and advice. This was a challenging shoot for me, with a full house of hot-blooded photography pros vying for her attention, and she changing her pose every other second to create a new look to satisfy everyone. I must really admire her raw energy, having to undergo a 6-hour shoot in a single day and still going strong at the end of it.

Looking at some of the pictures zoomed in, the focus on her eyes perhaps did not achieve the desired 'sweet spot'. I cannot recall for sure, it could be my poor handling of focus shift, or the model was moving and I missed the sweet spot when the shutter was pressed.

In any case, the overall look and effect of these photos turned out alright to me, which was why I decided to post them.

Hi bro, long time no see. You are back in S'pore? When are we shooting together again?

Thanks for the appreciation. ModelInn has the 'magical' power to summon the winds and shape them to his liking. All I did was just to press the shutter, so the nice effect must be to his credit.

Good opening write-up !

Thanks for bringing this exotic beauty to CS. Yes, I did 2 rounds of moderate unsharp mask, but it seems the sharpness is somewhat lost once the photos are converted into smaller files. Will take up your offer to learn PS from you soon, so that I can do better in the next shoot.

Thanks, EK. Nice knowing you. Yes, I usually leave my relatively expensive zooms at home when I go for such model shoots. Somehow the cheaper primes gave me better results. However, as Student has said, it may be just all in our minds. Blaming our tools is just a good consoling excuse when we fail to achieve the desired results.

Thinking back, to solve the potential oof problems, perhaps we could have done better command and control to freeze the models actions and not let her change her poses too fast.

Read your thread, and saw that we have a number of almost similar pics. Looking forward to shoot with you again.

No problem bro. Take your time to shoot. The model so pro sure can tahan a 6-hour shoot. It's whether you can tahan a 6-hour shoot. :bsmilie: (just joking).

I suggest you try to catch the model's attention and talk to her while you shoot, so that her concentration doesn't drift away. Of course, you shouldn't also take your own sweet time lah...:)

Hope to see more of your works soon.

Thanks. I happened to have the privilege to visit this beautiful country on a working trip a few years back.

After choking and throwing up after several rounds of Russian vodka during dinner, my Kazakh hosts treated me like their brother and aptly gave me a book called The Nomads, by Ilyas Yesenberlin (translated in English), as a parting gift. It narrated the historical legends of Kazakhstan, and it was a compelling read.

Another lasting impression was seeing women outnumbering men by 10:1 in the discotheque at the Hotel Intercontinental Astana, where I was staying. At least 25% of the women there have mixed bloodline and were as exotic and gorgeous as Irina. I left the country with my mind set that Kazakhstan has one of the most beautiful women in the world.

Now you can see why I could easily create this opening write-up.

Time to move there:p

This particular picture seems to draw a lot of attention in my CS gallery. Hope you like this too.
