Hi Guys,

I'm planning of getting my first DSLR and would like to get a back pack which could house the DSLR as well as my laptop for holiday trips.

Currently torn between the Lowepro Computrekker Plus AW and Crumpler (Forgot the model). Any comments on the above backpacks? Any other recommendations? :)

Thanks in advance.

Im using computrekker. I love it. very convenient cos all in one and i dont have to carry extra laptop bag. The pros is of course the combi weight of all...

;)

Cool. May I ask how much does it cost? :D

how about a minitrekker. but then it doesnt have support for a notebook (depends on the size also). Get those protection sleeve for notebook and slot into the minitrekker front compartment. its smaller. Computrekker is really pretty huge and a weight to carry around without camera nor notebook. My friend bought it and really regrets. somemore he dont have notebook.

hehehe.

regards,
tltan

I have the Rolling Compu Trekker Plus AW and I love it. You'll appreciate the rollers if you have heavy equipment, especially when you're travelling. This backpack will also fit into the overhead storage compartment in the aircraft.

Thank u all for ur replies.

Lubber Duckie> i saw the NG backpack somewhere in the forum but didnt knw it carry laptop as well. Will take it into consideration.

splendid warrior> I did thought of the rolling computrekker but from the specs, I dun think my laptop can fit...think mine is a 15-17" need to check...Btw, how much did u paid for it?

Lowepro's Compu Trekker is good for you purpose. I can put my 15" notebook at the notebook compartment of the backpack. But anything bigger than 16" might not be able to put in though.

Price should be ard S$150 or so in CP/TK Photo/etc, unless price has changed.

Recommend the National Geographic NG5162, medium bagpack.
Available at CP.
Here's an external link to more pictures and details.

this NG one i felt the padding, not as confy as those from Lowepro and won't be able to handle a small drop should you have a laptop and camera equipment in them. The laptop as you can see in the pic, places behind have very thin lining, it's going to hurt the back and you'll be able to feel the laptop's surface. too thin linings for me.

If you are doing a lot of walking and carrying then you might as well consider the Crumpler. I use the Karachi Outpost model. There are smaller ones and the new series is out. The advantage of Crumpler is that it has great fabrics and tougher than most popular brands, better padding and protection against knocks, and most importantly, Crumpler makes the most comfortable straps to date (I own LowePro, NG, Crumpler, Kata bags) and Kata comes in second. The LowePro straps wear out fast.

So if you are doing a lot of carrying and walking, my recommendation is the Crumpler. But it does cost more.

One more advantage for the NG and Crumpler is that they do not look like generic camera bags so your chances of getting mugged overseas are lesser.

I was going to go for the Crumpler (they've got a few including the 'older' model "The Puppet", and some of the others like "Karachi Outpost") Definitely check out their site and maybe try it at the shop.
I ended up getting the Kata R-103, fits a laptop, but must be careful about the back zip, I forgot to zip it a few weeks ago and my stuff drop onto concrete ground shattering my filter.

Have you seen and tested the Lowepro Mini Trekker? It would be a good companion for travelling light. Leave all your clothings in the hotel and just bring your essentials for photography. I bought mine for about $100. ;) Cheers!

Oh and I forgot to mention that the Crumpler's "Karachi Outpost" design is such that it is pickpocket safe. There is no way to access the camera section when you are wearing the backpack. That is the super bonus of getting the KO for my travels to "hot zones".

One of the problems i find with the computrekker is that it sits very high on the back. After a while I get a backache. It's also really a pain to reach into the bag for the camera.

The strap is adjustable and the way we pack our stuff does affect the weight distribution and thus determine if we will get a backpack anot...

I personally prefer a backpack than a sling cos the latter is carried on one shoulder only and we all know camera is not light. It be pretty tough to carry all the weight on one shoulder.

As for taking stuff outa bag, I would at times carry the backpack in front. This would be pickpocket proof and at the same time allow my hands to rest on the backpack and be more stable... ;) ;)

Enjoy ur wkend...

i sold off my CompuTrekker for a CompuRover..laptop compartment is much bigger (17"), zip is water resistant and can be used to put thin files/maps...i'd recommend this over the computrekker (personal preference)

I use a Crumpler "Brian's Hot Tub" which is great. Can take big cam + lenses + 17" Powerbook :) very comfortable to wear and waterproof too. There is a separate padded insert to put laptop in.

Crumpler
  • Heavy fabrics
  • Thick padding (and lasting) good protection
  • One of the best straps
  • Discreet (does not look like you are carrying camera gear)

but...
  • Heavy
  • Expensive
  • Looks teeny bopper to some

LowePro (generally)
  • Lightweight
  • Expansion system for lens case and extras

but...
  • Sometimes too lightweight to give ample protection against abuse
  • Screaming "I am a photographer!" and attracting the attention of thieves
  • Build quality not very good. Padding wears out fast with heavy usage

lowepro lightweight?? i've droped a fully loaded computrekker with laptop from chair height before and nothing (not even the laptop) was damaged, now even a crack on a hard cd case i put in the front non-padded comparment..

+evenstar> How much did u paid for ur compurover? I was comparing the Computrekker plus and Compurover, felt that the tripod holder seems to be more secure for the compurover as compared to computrekker plus...maybe becoz there r more straps holding the tripod. Any comments?

microcosm> i like crumpler's padding but ex leh...

I guess I might go for lowepro...seem to be more economical...considering that I still need to pay for the DSLR...
