An electronic shop in people's park... But I got it from my uncle who works there so maybe its a special price for me...
The FZ 50 has a couple of plus points, chief of which being the huge zoom range (35-420mm (35mm equivilent)) with the optical image stabiliser. You need about 3 lenses on a DSLR like the D40X or the EOS 400D/Digital Rebel XTi to have a range like that and these will cost upwards of $3000. In terms of optics, the Leica designed lenses on the FZ50/V Lux 1 are impressive displaying excellent resolution and contrast plus a reasonably fast aperture of F2.8-3.7. Both cameras also come with TTL metering system for external flash support as well. The 10 megapixel resolution is sufficient for most applications but...
This is where the problem/disadvantage comes in. The FZ50/V-Lux 1, like most superzoom bridge cameras, uses a tiny sensor to achieve the zoom range. There is no Bokeh like what you can see in a DSLR below the 50mm/F2.8 threshold due to the small sensor size as well. As a result, images are noisy beyond ISO 400 (Personally I do not even use above 200 if possible for my FZ50) and do not really stand up to scrutiny when printing above 10R sizes and the superiority of the larger sensor in the D40X/400D will show. The FZ uses the Venus III processor which seems to have over zealous noise reduction for high ISOs, though that can be overcome by shooting RAW or lowering the NR threshold. Which is where the V-Lux comes in...
I'm not sure of exactly what processor chip is in the V-Lux, but Leica did say that the processing is different in the V-Lux 1 to give a image typical of Leica digital cameras, though you might want to check out the sample on the Leica website and compare against the Panasonic sample. The Leica comes with a different software package (I believe its Photoshop Elements, but again try to confirm with Leica) and a bigger SD card out of the box and of course that famed little red dot.
Ultimately its a choice of what do you do with your photos and how much does one see him/herself investing in a DSLR system versus a camera like the FZ50/V-Lux 1.
If you do low light photography or wish to do so, then a DSLR seems a better bet:think: Although I must say that I am a FZ50 user and a very happy one at that.- Status
